RUSSIA, Ohio - Emily May led the Fort Recovery freshman volleyball team again Monday as the Indians defeated the Russia Raiders 25-19, 25-21 to improve to 13-5 on the season.

The Tribe also defeated Russia Saturday on the way to a 2-1 record at the Parkway Invitational. Its other win came against Greenville, and the lone loss of the day was to Van Wert.

May racked up 11 points, eight kills, three blocks and three digs, all team highs, in Monday's win over Russia. Josie Guggenbiller added 21 assists and five points, Chelsey Leuthold had six kills and Sarah Knapke added three digs.

At Parkway Saturday, May finished with 23 kills, 11 points, nine digs and five blocks in the three matches. Guggenbiller had 35 assists and 29 points, and Alyssa Brackman totaled 23 points and 12 digs. Carly Staugler notched 29 assists, Lorraine Shier had 12 kills and Luethold added nine digs.

Spartans top JC gridders

Jay County's junior varsity football team put up a pair of touchdowns in the opening half, but missed a costly extra point try in a 14-13 loss to the Connersville Spartans Monday.

John Hawn started the scoring with a 50-yard touchdown pass to Ruben Vela in the opening period, and added a 27-yard TD pass to Colton Lombardo in the second. But, the extra-point try was no good after the second score and the Patriots could not get on the board again.

Hawn finished 9-of-15 for 154 yards in the defeat, and Vela had seven receptions for 114 yards. Alan Brown added 134 yards on 20 rushing attempts.

Tribe spikers win two

ANSONIA, Ohio - The Fort Recovery Middle School volleyball teams each improved to 5-8 with wins Monday over the Ansonia Tigers. The eighth graders took a 25-19, 25-17 victory while the seventh grade squad won 25-14, 25-15.

Kendra Brunswick paced the eighth grade team with five points and five assists. Olivia Thien had five kills, and Haley Wilson scored five points.

Olivia Schwieterman finished with seven points and two kills for the seventh graders. Kayla Kahlig scored eight points, and Kara Faller totaled seven points.

EJ volleyball goes 2-1

East Jay Middle School's eighth grade and sixth grade volleyball teams each defeated the Bellmont Squaws Monday, winning by scores of 25-19, 25-21 and 25-11, 14-25, 15-5 respectively. The Chief seventh graders lost 25-12, 25-9.

Sierra Weatherhead scored nine points to lead the eighth graders while Abby Denney had eight points and Laura Castillo finished with seven. Katie Geesaman had four kills.

Gabie Cross led the EJMS sixth graders (5-3) with 12 points and three kills. Hannah Ainsworth had eight points, and Rachelle Jackson added three kills.

Mariah Hornaday finished with three kills for the seventh grade team.

Salamonie tops WJ spikers

WARREN - The West Jay eighth grade volleyball team finished at 8-8 after a 21-14, 11-21, 21-18 loss Monday to the Salamonie Rebels. The Eagle seventh graders also dropped their season finale, 21-7, 21-15.

Breanna Dahlstrom led the eighth graders in serving in each of the final two games as she finished with 11 points. Ashley Franklin scored six points, and Taylor Burris had five points.

Megan Sawyer's four points led the West Jay seventh grade team. Krisha Barber and Shannon Springer each added two points.

Kaup is runner-up

INDIANAPOLIS - Hannah Kaup posted the top effort as gymnasts from Portland's Gym City Gymnastics competed at Gymnastics Unlimited Saturday.

Kaup finished second in the 10-11-year-old Level 4 floor exercise with a score of 8.85. She added a sixth-place 8.85 on the vault and had a seventh-place all-around total of 33.25.

Top results from other gymnasts competing Saturday were: Courtney Miles - seventh on the 6-7-year-old Level 4 vault (8.65) and floor exercise (7.75); Sydney Lee - ninth on the 6-7-year-old Level 4 vault (8.55) and floor exercise (7.55); and Alexis Murrell - 8.25 on the 9-year-old Level 4 vault.[[In-content Ad]]
