May primary races are set (02/18/06)
By By MARY ANN LEWIS-
Several key positions in Jay County will see contested races in the May 2 primary as filing in the Jay County Clerk’s office for the election ended at noon Friday.
This year’s primary election generated early interest locally when five veteran police officers seeking the nomination for the Jay County Sheriff’s spot declared their intentions in mid-December. They were Republicans Bob Brown, Jay Halstead, Larry “Ray” Newton Jr., and Mitch Sutton, and Democrat Mark A. Barnett. Announcing in January was Greg Franks, who is also a Democrat.
Current sheriff Todd Penrod, who is serving the last year of his second term, is not eligible to seek the office again.
Additionally, former state representative Ron Liggett, a Democrat, announced he would try to retake the seat he lost in the 2004 general election in a highly contested race to Portland resident, Republican Bill Davis. The District 33 seat represents all of Jay and portions of Randolph and Delaware counties.
And long-time state Senator Republican Allen Paul, Richmond, will be challenged in the GOP primary by another Richmond resident, Bruce Wissel.
In addition to the sheriff’s race, this year’s ballot will see contested primary races locally for commissioner for the middle district, county council (Districts 1, 2 and 4), Jay County prosecuting attorney, as well as the two seats on the Redkey Town Board, where five Democrats have filed for two available seats.
While most township boards as well as the trustees’ positions have hopefuls, there have been no candidates file for Republican Precinct Committeeman in Dunkirk 1 and 3, South and North Redkey, Knox, Penn, Pike, Wayne 2, 4, 6, 7, Bearcreek, and Madison townships, and no Democrats in Dunkirk 1, Greene, Jackson, Pike Wayne 1 and Wayne 2 townships, clerk Jane Ann Runyon said.
Although the filing stage is over, any slots that are not filled can be done by party appointment through mid-summer, Runyon explained.[[In-content Ad]]Here is a comprehensive look at the local and state ballot for the May 2 primary election:
