Editor's Mailbag

By To the editor:-

We extend our deepest appreciation and admiration to the citizens of Portland, Jay County and beyond in your sincere efforts in helping our city through the weather-related crisis. The level of community spirit and patience shown by our citizens were second to no one and you should be proud of your efforts.

As a community we should be especially proud of the dedication of our city employees, who endured long working hours in tough conditions in helping to keep city services operating and the quick response to the clean-up efforts. The street, water, wastewater, police and fire departments should all be proud of their readiness to respond.

We extend our appreciation to AEP, Sprint, Ohio Valley Gas, REMC and Insight Communications employees for their dedicated efforts in helping to maintain and restore the services they provide. Thank you to Jeri Franks and the wonderful volunteers of the local Red Cross for operation of the shelter. We appreciate the cooperation of the Jay School Corporation, Jay County government and other communities with their offer of help.

To all the wonderful businesses in Portland who answered the call of community service by providing extended hours, food, beverages and equipment, we know who you are and we will never forget your generosity.

We appreciate the news media for allowing us access to communicate with our city through their efforts. Thanks to The Commercial Review, WZBD in Berne and especially to Rob, Jeff, Eric and staff at PG-14 for great cooperation during the live and taped broadcasts you allowed the mayor to have.

To the wonderful volunteers of all ages for your efforts in the sandbagging to combat the flooding, many residents and businesses owe you a great deal of appreciation.

To all the citizens who were involved in this community effort in coming together in this time of need: We appreciate your kind words, thoughts and prayers for our administration, our workers and our community. May God bless each and every one of you, and may God bless our wonderful community.

Bruce W. Hosier, mayor, and Barbara K. Blackford, clerk-treasurer, City of Portland
