Portland is going places.
That's what a city official told a group of local business leaders at a luncheon.
Bruce Hosier, mayor of Portland, gave his State of the City address Tuesday during a Jay County Chamber of Commerce luncheon. In his speech, he emphasized major projects planned for the city, and past projects that have helped Portland grow economically.
"As we continue to move forward and our journey begins another year in 2008, we must take the approach that our mindset as citizens and as a community will continue to be one of hope and optimism," the mayor said to the room full of people. "We must continue to build upon the spirit of cooperation we have seen from all different entities, organizations and citizens that have helped move our community forward."
Hosier listed several upcoming projects in the city - including some which have already started. He mentioned the Boundary Pike/Wayne Street project, the river path project, the extension of Lafayette Street west to Industrial Park Drive and the continued development of Hudson Family Park.
He said other projects in the community - such as the renovations to Jay County High School and Jay County Hospital, and the relocation of the John Jay Center for Learning at the Weiler Building - will create strong building blocks for the future.
The mayor also mentioned several recent projects in and near the city. The Poet Biorefining-Portland ethanol plant, construction of a Holiday Inn Express hotel, and the expansions of Mars Pet Care and Joyce-Dayton Corporation - Portland Division, are just a handful of the projects Hosier listed. He said such projects have created economic opportunities for the future. Some of the projects have not yet been completed.
"I believe these facts show that the city of Portland has created an atmosphere of opportunity ... that growing and investing in the city of Portland/Jay County is the right choice to make in helping ensure a better future for their employees, their businesses and our community," he said.
Hosier also commended all city department heads, boards and employees for their efforts during the past year. The employees who attended the event stood up and the audience clapped for them.
In closing, the mayor said, "As we move forward in 2008, let us all take this moment to renew our commitment to our community and continue to be ambassadors for positive change for the betterment of the city.
"Let us be proud of our successes, but let us recognize that room for improvement does exist and we must, as a community, be prepared to meet those needs and make those improvements."
