Mayor upbeat on projects (01/28/2009)

A local leader believes the city of Portland has the building blocks for a solid future.
Bruce Hosier, mayor of Portland, told local business leaders Tuesday that a weak economy will not stop the city from moving forward with a handful of projects.
"We will continue to build upon the strong elements we have in place and not sound retreat from progress," Hosier said to members of the Jay County Chamber of Commerce during a luncheon Tuesday afternoon.
Hosier told chamber members during his State of the City address that projects such as Hudson Family Park, the extension of Lafayette Street, and the development of a river path are expected to make some progress this year.
Funding for most of the Lafayette Street project has been secured through a grant, but the city is still looking at its options to fund the remaining work at Hudson Family Park. The last and most expensive phase of the park - which includes a pond and amphitheater - has yet to be completed. The path to and through the park is being funded by an Indiana Department of Transportation grant.
The Lafayette Street project will extend the street west to Industrial Park Drive.
Hosier also mentioned recent successes in the city, such as the widening of Industrial Park Drive, the creation of a Holiday Inn Express along West Votaw Street and the remodeling of the Weiler Building, which is now the home of WorkOne and the John Jay Center for Learning. A ground-breaking ceremony also was held for a new Walgreens, which is set to open this year.
A project that began in 2008 is expected to be completed by November, he said. The Boundary Pike/Wayne Street project is creating new curbs, sidewalks and separating storm and sanitary sewers.
"These facts are (evidence) that the city of Portland has created an atmosphere for investment and development - with posi-
tive results - and the city of Portland is the right place to do business," Hosier said about the recent projects completed in the city.
