Media coverage one-sided (4/16/04)

Editor's Mailbag

By To the editor:-

The United States of America has enough enemies in the world without the news media feeding our enemies more hatred for us.

The news coverage in Iraq couldn’t be more lopsided. Why does the media only report the negative aspect? Apparently because bad news sells more newspapers and television coverage.

Notwithstanding the fact that there are many extremists who want us out of Iraq and are willing to kill our soldiers, other Iraqi citizens and even themselves in the process, they are not the majority. Our military is fighting against the oppression of the Iraqi people and know first-hand their need and desire for liberation.

If our effort to bring democracy to the citizens of Iraq should somehow fail, it won’t be from lack of interest or from not giving them our full support. You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink. The Iraqi people have to want democracy for themselves as much as we want it for them.

Sometimes I think too much power is given to the press in that reporters are able to manipulate the news. If all we see, hear and read is bad news, does that mean that all the news is bad? It is what we are not hearing that I object to. Where is the truth in journalism if we don’t hear the whole truth? Don’t any of the journalists cover the stories of the people and places whose lives and situations have progressively improved?

I want our president and our military to know that America is proud of their commitment to keep our country safe. President Bush has proven himself to be a strong, decisive leader under tremendous circumstances. The bad press he gets is appalling.

Those who criticize and blame the president for the tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001 need a history lesson, and are presently getting one, on what was done and not done in previous years to safeguard our nation from such an atrocity.

The blame needs to be placed where it belongs, not dropped into the lap of the president. It wasn’t by chance but by choice that those 19 hijackers decided to kill, maim and destroy.

Critics of President Bush have accused him of both not doing enough to secure our homeland and doing too much by taking away some of our freedom. As Dr. Phil McGraw so eloquently puts it, “People who have nothing to hide, hide nothing.”

None of my freedom has been taken away.

One-sided news coverage for political reasons isn’t coverage at all; it is just poor reporting.

Everyone has an opinion of what is going on in the world, including me, but it shouldn’t be interjected into the news as fact. Of course, that is just my opinion.

Aren’t you just the least bit curious about the progress that is being made in Iraq?
