Media distort gun control issues

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:
Due to reduced revenue and circulation many papers have reduced the number of real reporters and rely on a news service such as the AP. While it is usually OK, when it reports politics or gun control it becomes a liberal spin machine that has little or no concern with the facts.
A prime example was the headline  “NRA exerts influence on nation’s courtrooms.”  It claims that the NRA is opposing judges who would “enforce gun control laws.” In fact the NRA wants judges who, like the majority of voters, believe that our law and the Constitution, including the Second Amendment, actually mean what they say.
It says that the NRA opposed Supreme Court nominees Sotomayor and Kagan with “limited evidence to back up its claims that the two were opposed to gun rights.”
It failed to note that Sotomayor had already ruled in federal court that the Second Amendment was not an individual right and did not apply to the states.
It also ignored the fact that in the Supreme Court McDonald case they both joined a dissent which stated that the Second Amendment is not an individual right and does not apply to the states because, unlike most of the Bill of Rights, it is not a fundamental right.
It quotes Sen. Lisa Murkowski that, “A vote on the Supreme Court justice, in my mind, should be free from those political interest groups that are trying to pressure you.”
The word “Borked” became a verb in the dictionary after left wing groups led the most vicious personal attack on Judge Bork by Ted Kennedy, liberals, pro-abortion groups, and the national media. Kennedy’s speech trashing Bork did not contain a single word of truth, but it carried the day and Bork’s nomination was defeated because he correctly stated that there is no right to an abortion to be found in the Constitution.

Finally they conclude that the NRA exacted their revenge against Lugar for voting to confirm Sotomayor and Kagan.
I am the NRA and so are millions of other gun owners.
All we did was inform gun owners of Lugar’s 35 year record of supporting anti-gun legislation and extreme left wing judges that he was desperately trying to hide. It was voting Indiana gun owners who took their revenge on the second most liberal Republican Senator.
