Miller continues setting records

Collegiate Check-up

Eme Miller continued to prove Saturday that a year off didn’t do much to slow her down.
The 2012 Jay County High School graduate who has broken the Defiance College 5K record twice this year, snapped the 6K mark and earned all-conference honors Saturday at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships.
Miller, who did not run for the Yellow Jackets last season, crossed the finish line in the 6K race on her home course in 22 minutes, 54.5 seconds. She finished in third place behind HCAC champion Ryann-Rebecca Montgomery (22:00.6) of Rose-Hulman and Hillary Cain (22:28.5) of Franklin. No other runner broke the 23-minute mark.
The sophomore’s effort shattered the school’s record for a 6K competition, surpassing Ellen Stryffeler’s previous mark by 31.9 seconds. The third-place finish also tied Stryffeler for the best HCAC finish by a Defiance runner.
Megan Taylor (JCHS – 2011) also competed at the HCAC Championships, running for Manchester College. She was 35th in the field of more than 100 runners with a time of 25:27.2.

Greg Kahlig
FRHS – 2010
Powered the University of Findlay men’s basketball team to an 80-76 season-opening win Friday over Division I Wright State.
Kahlig shared the team-high of 20 points and his two free throws with 33 seconds left gave the Oilers a six-point lead. He added another free throw to seal the game with nine seconds remaining.
The senior, who is Fort Recovery’s all-time leading scorer, shot 6-of-8 from the field and added four rebounds, one assist and one steal.
Kahlig also had 30 points, six rebounds, two assists and a steal Saturday as Findlay fell 96-87 to Dayton, another Division I squad. He hit four 3-pointers and was 12-of-13 from the foul line.

Erika Waugh
SAHS – 2011
Helped the Calvin College women’s swim team to a 157.5-84.5 victory Saturday over Alma.
Waugh cruised to victory in her lone individual event at the meet, winning the 1,000-yard freestyle by more than 20 seconds in 11 minutes, 16.73 seconds. She joined Margaret Rechel, Lexi Scott and Kristen Kinzer in posting a winning time of 4:11.91 in the 400 medley relay.

Erin Hunt
Jay County – 2011
Surpassed her career-high scoring mark for the second straight game Friday in the Bethel College women’s basketball team’s 87-85 victory over Indiana Tech.
Hunt shot 4-of-6 from the field and made a pair of 3-pointers as she finished with 12 points to surpass the 11 she put up in the Pilots’ season-opening win over Concordia. She also had four rebounds, three assists, a steal and a block.
The junior had nine points Saturday as Bethel fell 93-74 to Shawnee State, and finished with six points Wednesday in a 100-69 loss to Roosevelt.

Brock McFarland
Jay County – 2013
Started for the Grace College men’s basketball team in the first game of his collegiate career, a 100-58 victory over Great Lakes Christian.
McFarland, who is Jay County’s all-time leading scorer, dished out six assists in the win for the Lancers. He also had four rebounds, three points and one steal.

Wade Gelhaus
FRHS – 2013
Opened his collegiate career Monday in the Saginaw Valley State University men’s basketball team’s 71-57 victory over Adrian.
Gelhaus came off the bench to grab three rebounds for the Cardinals. He also had two points.

Dustin Wanner
South Adams – 2012
Came up with another interception for the Taylor University football team in Saturday’s 26-19 double-overtime loss to Marian.

Wanner picked off a Joey Hecklinski pass to end Marian’s opening drive of the second half. It was his third interception this season.
The sophomore also made three tackles.

Mark Mattraw
Fort Recovery – 2010
Saw his first action of the season Saturday for the University of Toledo football team in its 55-16 blowout of Eastern Michigan.
Mattraw played on the offensive line, helping to pave the way for a 334-yard rushing effort. The victory improved the Rockets to 6-3 on the season and 4-1 in the Mid-American Conference.

Neal Fennig
Jay County – 2011
Competed for the Ball State University men’s swim team Saturday as it fell 179-109 to Evansville.
Fennig posted a fourth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5 minutes, 3.71 seconds. He also teamed with Michael Oaks, Cole Smith and Austin Green for a second-place time of 3:13.69 in the 400 freestyle.

Kyle Kahlig
Fort Recovery – 2012
Helped the University of Northwestern Ohio women’s basketball team survive a triple overtime thriller Tuesday for a 111-103 win over Mount Vernon Nazarene.
Kahlig finished with seven points, four rebounds and one assist in the marathon victory. She also had eight points and three rebounds Saturday as the Racers knocked off Wilberforce 93-86.

Kegan Comer
Jay County – 2013
Was the No. 3 scorer for the University of St. Francis men’s basketball team in its 62-61 loss Saturday to Davenport.
Comer started for the Cougars and hit a pair of 3-pointers as he finished with eight points. He also had three assists and two rebounds.
The sophomore scored 11 points Tuesday in an 86-82 loss to St. Catharine College.

Jason Pottkotter
Fort Recovery – 2012
Tallied three points Friday as the University of Northwestern Ohio men’s basketball team dropped its season opener 95-91 to Montreat.
Pottkotter made his only three-point attempt in the season-opening loss. He also had one rebound Monday as the Racers topped St. Andrews 71-60.

Kelsey Fiely
Fort Recovery – 2013
Played for the University of Northwestern Ohio volleyball team Friday in its 25-16, 23-25, 25-19, 25-17 loss to Wittenberg.
Fiely saw action in one game and recorded two digs. The loss dropped the Racers to 20-7 on the season.

Katie Simmons
Jay County – 2012
Competed for the IPFW women’s cross country team as it finished fifth out of seven teams Saturday at the Summit League Championships.
Simmons posted a time of 25 minutes, 1.89 seconds, for the Mastodons in the 6K race. The team finished with 123 points while North Dakota State won with 25.[[In-content Ad]]
