In her third collegiate meet, Eme Miller picked up her first win.
Miller, who graduated from Jay County High School in June, took the top spot in the 500-yard freestyle Saturday as the Defiance College women’s swimmers came away with a split in a three-team event. The Yellow Jackets defeated Ursuline 45-34 while falling 54-39 to Urbana.
The first victory of Miller’s career came as she posted a time of 5 minutes, 54.99 seconds, in the 500 freestyle. She finished more than 13 seconds ahead of Urbana senior Samantha Cowgill.
The freshman was also second with a time of 2:12.87 in the 200 freestyle.
Miller teamed with Emilee Boleyn, Jacqueline Loock and Savannah Marquez to win the 400 freestyle with a time of 4:08.11 on Friday as Defiance lost to Malone (99-79) and Mount Union (146-52).
She was second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:18.84 and third in the 500 freestyle in 5:49.78.
Katie Simmons
Jay County – 2012
Turned in the top time for the IPFW women’s cross country team, which finished sixth out of nine squads Saturday at the Summit League Championships hosted by Oakland.
Simmons finished the 6K race in 23 minutes, 41 seconds, to lead the Mastodons for the first time this season. She was 28th out of 73 runners overall.
Mary Hudson

Picked up a second-place finish Saturday in the Calvin College women’s swim team’s 197-83 victory over host Olivet.
Hudson took the runner-up spot in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1 minute, 14.49 seconds. She was also fourth in the 200 breaststroke in 2:41.55 and the 100 butterfly in 1:06.99.
The freshman finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke Friday with a time of 1:13.49 as the Knights fell 157-83 to Grand Valley State.
Maddie Moore
South Adams – 2009
Assisted on the only goal for the Bluffton University women’s soccer team in its 3-1 loss Saturday to visiting Transylvania.
Moore’s assist came in the ninth minute of the game when Aimee Whitmer scored off her corner kick to tie the game for the Beavers (3-12-1) at 1-1. It was the second assist for Moore this season.
Frank Thien
Ft. Recovery – 2009
Was one of six players to catch a pass Saturday for the Ohio Northern University football team as it picked up its third win 20-19 over Muskingum.
Thien caught a pair of passes for the Polar Bears (3-5), who rallied from a 12-point halftime deficit. He caught a 22-yard pass from quarterback Tate Humphrey in the fourth quarter, and also had a 6-yard reception in the first.
Cori Vormohr
Jay County – 2009
Helped the Ball State University women’s swim team to a 162-137 victory Saturday over Mid-American Conference rival Akron.
Vormohr’s best effort came in the 200-yard breaststroke as she finished fifth in 2 minutes, 26.41 seconds. She was also seventh in the 100 breaststroke at 1:07.09.
Erin Hunt

Played for the Bethel College women’s basketball team Wednesday in its 71-47 season-opening victory over St. Francis.
Hunt was one of eight players to record a steal as the Pilots racked up 19 in the game. She also had one assist.
Megan Taylor

Competed Saturday for the Manchester College women’s cross country team, which finished second in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships hosted by Bluffton.
Taylor posted the No. 10 time for the Spartans as she finished the 6K race in 26 minutes, 27.1 seconds. She was 38th out of 96 runners overall.[[In-content Ad]]
