Minster hands FR first loss (12/18/04)

MINSTER, Ohio — The Indians were just a step behind most of the night.

Fort Recovery’s boys basketball team played from behind for all of the final three quarters Friday as it lost for the first time this season, 56-49 to the Minster Wildcats.

The Tribe (3-1, 1-1 Midwest Athletic Conference) had just two leads in the contest, both of which came in the first two minutes.

It tied the game late in the second quarter and trailed by just three at halftime, but could never regain the advantage.

Minster scored the first five points of the second half, led by as many as 10 and fought off the Indians after they closed to within four with 1:39 remaining.

Andy Beckman shot well for the Wildcats on a relatively dismal offensive night for both teams — Minster shot 35 percent, and Fort Recovery finished at 33 percent. He finished 6-of-8, including 3-of-4 from 3-point land, for 17 points.

Dan Sommer added 16 points and four rebounds, and Justin Spillers had seven points. Jeff Preston had a team-high five rebounds, and Jake Luttmer and Zac Boeke each had four assists.

The Fort Recovery loss came despite a pair of double-doubles from Travis VanSkyock and Sean Kahlig which led to a 38-25 rebounding advantage. VanSkyock grabbed 11 rebounds to go along with his 17 points, and Kahlig added 10 rebounds with his 11 points.

Dusty Tobe and Clint Tobe each scored six points, and Greg Faller had three assists and a pair of steals.

Junior varsity

Minster grabbed control in the second quarter as it rolled to a 57-37 victory over Fort Recovery in junior varsity action.

The Wildcats led by four after the first period and outscored the Tribe 23-7 in the second. They went on to the win thanks to a 51-percent shooting effort.

The Indians, who shot just 31 percent, were led by Trent Brunswick with 10 points. Bobby Rammel added nine points, three rebounds and three assists.

Tony Diller and Lucas Staugler each had six points.

Logan Sommer went 5-of-6 from the field for his 13 points for the Wildcats, and Eric Bernhold was 5-of-7 as he also scored 13 points.

Sommer had five rebounds, and Bernhold grabbed four.[[In-content Ad]]
