Mom out to clarify issues

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:
I feel that I need to clarify a few things in regard to the article, “Long: Our Schools Are Safe”.  When I made the statement “These are good kids”, I was speaking of my children. I can not account for any of the other children involved.  Also when I stated that there was no gang, I was speaking of the supposed “White Doves”. I am not certain of this other “gang”. The “White Doves” was a statement made only to poke fun at the idea of the other group calling themselves a gang. “White Dove” stands for peace.  This joke ended up getting way out of hand.
The fight that occurred at school last week was the result of years of provocation from the other boy. For years my son avoided this type of altercation by being a bigger person and walking away.
I am sure that knowing that my son had not reacted for all these years allowed this boy to think that Tuesday would be no different. This altercation had nothing to do with any type of gang activity.
What happened Monday was a product of a rumor gone crazy. The texts and blogs about guns being found at school, rival gang shootings, etc. (which were all untrue) only served to make things worse. The school corporation, especially Mr. Ford and Mr. Dodd, along with the Jay County Sheriff’s Department, had the “actual” situation under control and I believe our kids were safe.
I did contact WANE-TV to express my concerns that its blog may have allowed this other “gang” to misconstrue this attention as fame.  One of the last blogs the station allowed to post was suggestive or taunting this group to act unlawfully.
In closing, I would like to say to these other kids that there are people in this community that believe in you and see your potential.
“Taking the wrong path doesn’t determine who you are; it is staying on the wrong path that does.”
Thank you,
Melissa Grimes
