BRYANT ACCIDENT

A Bryant man’s pick-up truck was struck by an unknown vehicle while parked at his residence on Friday or Saturday.

Ted L. Huey, 203 N. Meridian St., told Jay County police his 2003 Ford F-150 was hit between 11 p.m. Friday and about 6:13 p.m. Saturday.

The damage to the truck, also registered to Alice F. Huey, same address as driver, was estimated at $1,000 to $2,500.

CITY ACCIDENTS

Portland police investigated a three-vehicle accident on North Meridian Street Saturday morning.

A 1995 Chevrolet van driven by William F. Fischer, 84, 5810 East Cummins Road, Montpelier, and a 1995 Ford car driven by Beth A. Loy, 43, 8645 East 50 North, Portland, collided at 11:18 a.m.

Fischer said he was driving north on Meridian Street, just north of High Street. He began to change lanes and did not see Loy driving north beside him. The vehicles collided. Loy’s car then went off the east side of the street and struck a parked 1998 Buick Century, which is registered to Betty J. Englehart, 600 S. Meridian St., Portland.

Combined estimated damage to the van and two cars was $2,500 to $5,000.

A rural Winchester man told Portland police his vehicle struck a parked car Saturday at 7 a.m.

Kent C. Anderson, 37, 1792 South 300 East, said he was backing up in a driveway located at 203 S. Hayes St. His 2005 Dodge Ram hit a parked 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier.

Combined damage to the truck and the car, which is registered to Jack Barker, 2629 South Ind. 1, Dunkirk, was estimated at $1,000 to $2,500.

PENNVILLE VANDALISMS

The Pennville marshal is investigating several vandalisms that occurred in Pennville between 11 p.m. Thursday and 1 a.m. Friday.

Eight vehicles and 12 signs or buildings were damaged by spray paint.

Among those is Pennville Elementary School, where the school building and school sign were painted. About four street signs, some speed limit signs and stop signs also were painted, Pennville Marshal Ralph Frazee said.

A trailer owned by the Jay County High School building trades class also was painted while parked at a house the class is constructing for Jay County Habitat for Humanity, Frazee said.

Eight vehicles also were damaged by spray paint. Some of the license plates also were painted.

Frazee said most of the vandalisms occurred on Pleasant and Washington streets and Max Drive.

PENNVILLE THEFT

A Pennville woman told police more than $60 was stolen from her residence Sunday.

Judy Betterton, 145 N. Union St., said the money was taken from her bedroom between 2 and 6 p.m. Sunday. No signs of forced entry were found.

BRYANT THEFT

Someone pumped gas at a Bryant gas station and left without paying Saturday.

An employee of Bear Creek Crossing, 893 East Ind. 18, told Jay County police a man driving a green Dodge van pumped $37.02 in gas and left without paying. The theft occurred at 2:09 p.m. The vehicle left and went west on Ind. 18.

CITY THEFT

Someone took a CD player from a rural Portland resident’s car recently.

Aaron Evans, 6839 East 300 South, told Portland police someone pried open the door of his 1991 Chevrolet Camaro while it was parked behind Subway, 611 N. Meridian St., Portland.

A Pioneer AM/FM CD player radio was removed from the dash board. The incident occurred between sometime Wednesday and 11:11 p.m. Saturday.

The lock on the driver’s side door was removed and paint was chipped off the door.

Estimated damage to the car and value of the stereo was not listed on the police report.

CITY VANDALISM

A Dunkirk resident’s vehicle was damaged while it was parked at a Portland restaurant on Friday.

Shannon Hill, 126 S. Main St., told Portland police her 1997 Ford pick-up truck was damaged while parked at Tom and Rod’s Steakhouse, 214 W. Main St., Portland. The incident occurred between 3:45 and 4:12 p.m. The driver’s side window was broken. Estimated damage to the vehicle was $300.

FIRE RUN

The Portland Fire Department was called to a report of a fire today at 12:30 a.m. in Greene Township.

Nine firefighters and one truck arrived at 1897 South 300 West at 12:33 a.m. The fire was found to be a controlled burn. Firefighters left the scene at 12:39 a.m.

AREA COURTS

A Portland woman was sentenced recently in Celina Municipal Court for several misdemeanor offenses.

April R. Lewis, 23, was sentenced to 10 days in the Mercer County Jail for failure to maintain control and two counts of driving while license suspended. She also was ordered to pay fines and court costs after pleading no contest to the charges.

For two charges of driving while intoxicated, she was sentenced to three days in Mercer County Jail after pleading no contest. Her driver’s license also was suspended for one year.

All of the sentences will be served concurrently in the Mercer County Jail along with a 10-day sentence for underage consumption of alcohol dating to 2000.

Also in Celina Municipal Court, Rick A. Young, 41, Portland, was fined $60 for a seat belt violation.[[In-content Ad]]
