Moore breaks 19 minutes

Hannah Moore is one of the best runners on one of the top teams in the country.
The 2012 South Adams High School graduate turned in the best time of her career Saturday to help the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) No. 25 Huntington University women’s cross country team to a second-place finish at the Wilmington College Fall Invitational.
Moore broke the 19-minute barrier for the first time in her career, finishing the 5K race in 18 minutes, 48.41 seconds. She was 14th out of 340 competitors at the meet and finished as the No. 2 runner for the Foresters.
Huntington scored 109 points to finish 27 behind champion Ashland, an NCAA Division II school, and 34 ahead of Mount Union, an NCAA Division III school, in the 33-team field.

Frank Thien
Ft. Recovery – 2009
Caught his third touchdown pass of the season Saturday as the Ohio Northern University football team rolled to a 56-14 victory over Marietta.
Thien caught a 32-yard touchdown pass from Tate Humphrey with 11:59 on the clock in the third quarter to extend the Polar Bears’ lead to 49-7. He also caught a 39-yard pass for ONU (2-4) to help set up Humphrey’s 3-yard TD run in the opening quarter.

Katie Simmons
Jay County – 2012
Was the No. 2 runner Friday for the IPFW women’s team, which finished 15th out of 23 teams at the Bradley University Cross Country Classic.
Simmons completed the 6K race with a time of 22 minutes, 41 seconds. She finished in 81st place in the field of 222 competitors.

Maddie Moore
South Adams – 2009
Extended her goal-scoring streak to three games Saturday in the Bluffton University women’s soccer team’s 5-1 loss to Hanover.
Moore, who scored two goals apiece in the Beavers’ 4-3 loss Oct. 6 to Earlham and their 4-0 win Oct. 10 over Anderson, got on the board again Saturday. She tallied the lone goal of the game for Bluffton (3-9-1) on an assist from Aimee Whitmer about 17 minutes into the second half.
The senior also took 12 shots — eight on goal — in Tuesday’s 1-0 loss to Manchester.

Drew Houck
Jay County – 2011
Helped the Indiana University East men’s golf team to a third-place finish out of seven teams at Friday’s Berea Fall Invitational.
Houck posted a score of 79 in the tournament at Battlefield Golf Club. He was the No. 4 golfer for the Red Wolves and finished 14th out of 39 overall.


Allison Beitler
South Adams – 2010
Turned in the top finish among three former Starfires who competed Saturday at the Bethel College Invitational.
Beitler crossed the finish line in 20 minutes, 37.6 seconds, for the Goshen College women’s cross country team, which finished in sixth place. She posted the No. 3 time for the Maple Leafs in the 5K event and was 35th out of 113 overall.

Tim Lehman
South Adams – 2012
Helped the Goshen College men’s team to a fourth-place finish at the Bethel Invitational.
Lehman turned in the No. 7 time for the Maple Leafs in the 8K race. He was 42nd out of 118 overall in 27 minutes, 50.1 seconds.

Sam Heckard
South Adams – 2010
Also competed in the Bethel Invitational, running for the host Pilots.
Heckard posted a time of 30:50.2 to finish in 98th place. He was the No. 9 runner on the Bethel squad.

Dustin Wanner
South Adams – 2012
Helped the Taylor University football team on special teams Saturday as it defeated Concordia 34-7.
Wanner made the tackle on Concordia’s Brenton Nuby on a kickoff return in the fourth quarter. He is a freshman defensive back for the Trojans (3-4).

Megan Taylor
Jay County – 2011
Competed Saturday for the Manchester College women’s cross country team as it hosted the Manchester Invitational.
Taylor completed the 6K race in 25 minutes, 26.3 seconds, as the Spartans finished second out of seven teams. She was the No. 8 runner for Manchester and placed 26th out of 71 competitors overall.
