More protest graduation uniform (04/24/08)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

I am totally sickened and sad to realize that our school system does not support our brave young men/women who choose to serve our country and protect us!

Don't get me wrong, I love sports, admire our farmers & treasure our scholars. But we honor our athletes, scholars and farmers at our Jay County High School graduation ceremonies. But not our soldiers!

May I ask who is the most brave, courageous and honorable in these troubling times and putting their life on the line for you, our families and myself?

Please think long and hard the message that you are presenting to our children with your decision to not allow the three brave boys, who have decided to serve our county, to wear their dress blues during these 2008 graduation ceremonies. They deserve to walk proud in their military blues and receive the recognition of their triumphs and courage.

And further more, I have a challenge for you.

Please step up in front of our many U.S. military veterans of this county and tell them that you and our school board do not respect them enough to allow our future veterans to take pride in their decision to serve this wonderful country that we live in!

Sincerely,

Kim Mills

It's sad

To the editor:

First of all, I want to say to these young men, I'm very proud of you.

These three young men have worked hard to graduate from boot camp and to graduate from Jay County High School. They need to be recognized for their hard work, so I ask each and every one of you to stand up for these three fine men.

Mr. Jeremy Gulley, it is sad that you are saying they cannot wear their military uniforms but you say they can wear them under their cap and gown.

Why should they have to cover up their military uniforms? This is wrong, Mr. Gulley. You should be proud of these three men. Mr. Gulley, would you cover up our flag? No.

If they were your son or daughter, how would you feel to tell them no, something that they are so proud of and believe in.

All the people in Jay County need to stand up for these young men and support them. They are proud of what they can do, so let them know that they can be proud of the people in Jay County. Stand up for what we all believe in.

Shameful

To the editor:

To the families of the basic training soldiers, I feel your outrage about why your sons can't wear their uniforms when they graduate.

As a veteran of 19 years, that is the beginning of a series of events that will be disappointments.

I made history in Iraq as the first female in the signal company to do a combat landing in Iraq. We were also hit by a road-side bomb. I never got any recognition for the things I did or the sacrifice I gave.

The company I was with hated me just because I was a woman. There is not enough space on this page to tell the sacrifices I have made for my country and Jay County.

When I came home from combat, nobody came to see me if I was even okay. Over a period of time, because of my combat injuries, I was fired from my job.

What I want to say to you is, fight for your country but along the way you will find that a big portion of people don't care. People will never understand unless they walked in your combat boots. You may be the many unsung heroes that may go unnoticed in our community.

You have to find that place in your heart where you don't need man's recognition but you know in your heart who you are. God knows and when you see him you will be rewarded in time.

Don't look to people for honor and recognition but obtain from God and carry that in your heart. You know you are soldiers and to the families thanks for the sacrifice; but if you continue to look to people to honor you or your sons, you will find disappointment. I found that many few people even care.

This is just another shameful act. Fight for your rights to honor the Army and our community. Fighting for your rights will be hard and the outcome may not be what you want, but that is what comes with the territory.

Good luck and God bless!
