Moving on jail project (11/11/2008)
Jay County Commissioners
By By STEVE GARBACZ-
With a favorable vote last week, the Jay County Commissioners are already moving ahead with the jail expansion.
The commissioners covered building topics with Jeff Badders of SchenkelShultz Monday afternoon. Badders suggested the commissioners should contract a full- or part-time construction manager to help guide the project. Badders will track down pricing for those services and return with those numbers.
Badders also suggested that a land survey be completed and the commissioners agreed to seek a contract with Miller Land Survey to get the work done.
The commissioners discussed steps they will need to take to demolish the former car dealership, which sits on the expansion site at the corner of Main and Ship streets. The building is currently serving as a storage facility for the county and will be flattened before construction gets under way.
The county will continue to make progress on expansion details in hopes of starting construction as the weather warms up in early 2009.
The commissioners are still working with their attorney to hammer out a contract with SchenkelSchultz and will be considering candidates to appoint to a building committee to oversee the bonding process.
In other business Monday afternoon, the commissioners:
•Were informed by Sheriff Ray Newton that a police cruiser, which struck a culvert weeks ago, is not repairable. Newton has located a replacement car at a cost of $20,283.52. With $11,325 coming from the insurance payout, Newton will make up the difference from LOIT Public Safety Funds. The commissioners made Newton purchasing agent to buy the vehicle.
•Approved replacement of two bridges. Bridge 42 will be replaced at a cost of $65,982.64 and Bridge 43 at a cost of $611,806. The work will be done by Primco Inc., which won the bridge replacement contracts for the county.
•Discussed how utility bills will be paid at the Dunkirk Fire and EMS Station. The commissioners said utilities will be paid 50/50. The total payments will be made from the JEMS budget and the Dunkirk Fire Department will refund the county its half.
•Answered a question from highway superintendent Ken Wellman about vacation and sick days. Wellman asked if a person on leave could begin drawing those paid days for 2009 before the end of the year. The commissioners told him that those compensated days could not be used until the turn of the year.[[In-content Ad]]
