Museum preparing display (04/01/08)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

As new board members of the Jay County Historical Society, it has been a pleasure for Tom Young and myself to create a new room at the museum. We have named it "Crui sin' Jay County in the 50s and 60s."

We decided to start our research back in January, but where does one start? We talked to friends for old pictures and memorabilia from this period. It was slow, but we got some.

Then one day I stumbled on some old Graphics from the 50s and 60s. What a wealth of history in those old papers. If you remember The Graphic, you probably will remember the photos with a headline "What is it?", or maybe "Sweetheart of the week," or even "Employee of the week."

It seems if anything exciting or not happened in Jay County, a young Frank Kenyon was standing there with his camera just waiting to snap the next cover photo for The Graphic.

Today at the museum, Tom and I were printing more photos from the yearbooks and The Graphic, when in walks Frank Kenyon to pay his historical society dues.

I talked with Frank and told him of our plans. He walked back to the new 50s and 60s room with me, and he looked at all of the pictures we had hung. I could see it was bringing back some fond memories of the many years taking photos for The Graphic. He looked at me and said, "This is an amazing place."

It told him that it is, and thanked him for the time he spent taking all those great photos for all to remember our childhood in Jay County in the 50s and 60s. As he left, I said, "I bet it was hard trying to find a sweetheart every week." He said, "It was hard, but someone had to do it." Thank you, Frank Kenyon, for all the memories.

As the historical society starts its open house (with the first one Saturday, April 5) and we open the 50s and 60s room, we hope you will come visit us and you too will remember your childhood as Tom and I have had a great time putting this thing together.

Hope to see you on Saturday. Maybe you too will see one of your "fondest memories" of your childhood in Jay County.

Thank yous

To the editor:

I would like to thank the community for their donations to Keith Turpin. With your help Keith was able to go to the 2008 Aloha Goodwill Games.

Keith did a great job at these games. He competed in weapons, forms, soft swords and point sparring. He walked away with four gold medals. Because of these wins, Keith was asked to be on the U.S. National Martial Arts team.

He also got to see many of the famous sites in Hawaii. Keith had an awesome time.

Again, thank you for your donations. It was greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Catherina and Keith Turpin

Problems

To the editor:

Here we go again. I am going to voice my opinion. It may be a waste of time, but here goes.

To start with, our government is at it again. Getting us in a world of hurt. I'd think after eight years of being in office, a person would get better instead of worse. Four dollars for gas is a bunch of bull. I hear there is lots of oil. We buy stuff from all over the world, costing us jobs. I hear Mexico has lots of oil. Why don't we trade?

When the Alaska pipeline was built, I have heard that Japan gets most of it? How has that helped us? It was also talked about another pipeline, but it cost too much. What will it cost us without one? Do you remember when a quart of oil was 19 cents?

If a certain person gets to be our new president, I do not believe he has enough knowledge or experience to run this country.

I think our military should be taking care of our borders instead of our allies. Most of these people hate our country. They should be sent back to their own country.

Once there was the Korean War. I don't know what for because things are worse now with North Korea than in the early 1950s, and now they have nuclear weapons.

Then came Vietnam. What were we getting our boys killed for? Rice? I was told by my friends that were over there that there were times our guys were shot in the back by children. What kind of war games were they playing?

And this war that we are in now. What are we going to gain except many lives lost. Sand for our slick roads? I am serious. I think if our government had not spent all the money on wars, we would have had enough oil forever.
