Myron named health officer (10/20/03)

Replaces long-time officer Gillum

By By Mike Snyder-

Some questions about possible turmoil at the Jay County Health Department may have been answered with the appointment of a new health officer.

Jay County Commissioners, acting this morning on the recommendation of the county health board, approved Dr. Stephen Myron as health officer effective immediately.

Myron replaces long-time health officer Dr. Eugene M. Gillum, who resigned in frustration over the failure of the Jay County Council to grant full-time status to the position of food inspector.

Redkey veterinarian Dr. James Wasson, who is president of the county board of health, gave that recommendation to Commissioners Mike Leonhard, Gary Theurer and Milo Miller Jr. this morning.

Wasson also told the commissioners that approximately two hours after the health board voted to recommend Myron, health board member Dr. Kathleen Galbraith announced her resignation.

The commissioners plan to approve Dr. Marvin McBride to the vacant seat if questions about political party affiliation can be resolved.

No more than four members of the seven-member board can be members of the same party. McBride has voted in the Republican primary in recent years, and there are already four Republicans on the health board.

In another health department matter, Wasson said that former food inspector Anita Clott has agreed to return to the position to help keep certifications for restaurants current. Clott had previously resigned from the position to seek a full-time job elsewhere.

Wasson said he felt Clott was qualified for the position and was an asset to the department.

Gillum talked with the commissioners later in the morning, and they thanked him for his service to the county.

In another health-related appointment this morning, the commissioners approved Dr. Dave Fullenkamp as a member of the Jay County Hospital Board. Fullenkamp, a local optician, will replace Dr. Dave Vormohr, who recently resigned from the board because he was moving from the area.

Also this morning, the commissioners:

•Reviewed information from Leon Leach, manager of the Jay County Landfill, regarding property value guarantees for residents living near the facility.

As part of a bid to win expansion, Waste Management agreed to offer to enter into the guarantees, which attempt to blunt any negative impact the landfill might have on the sale of property.

Approximately 45 home owners living within a one-mile radius of the landfill and its Phase I expansion borders will be eligible to participate in the property value guarantee program.

•Agreed to switch the county’s Internet service. Sprint DSL service will cost $179 per month — saving the county approximately $370 per month over the current wireless Internet service provided by OnlyInternet of Bluffton. Installation of the equipment needed for the Sprint service is free, as are the first two months of a two-year contract.[[In-content Ad]]
