NCC not discouraged by delay
The North Central Conference responded Tuesday to Jay School Corporation’s decision to postpone its discussion about its invitation to join the league.
“The North Central Conference (NCC) is neither discouraged nor disappointed in Jay County High School’s action to not take action on our invitation to become a member of the NCC,” the group said in a press release distributed by email. “We understand that each school corporation has to feel comfortable when entering into an agreement to become a member of any athletic conference; they have a process they are following to ensure they make the right decision for all stakeholders at Jay County High School and the Portland community.”
JCHS principal Phil Ford said Monday that he didn’t expect the delay to cause any problems, noting that throughout the process he has told NCC officials that he didn’t expect to have a decision until March.
Jay School Board had been scheduled to discuss the invitation to the NCC at its regular meeting Monday, but superintendent Tim Long pulled the topic from the agenda saying administrators needed more time to gather information.
The main concern about joining the conference is that it could create more travel for student athletes, Long said. Seven of the schools in the proposed 12-team North Central Conference are more than 55 miles from JCHS, and three are more than 100 miles away.
Jay County, which is in its third season competing as in independent, applied to join the NCC in December. Officials from the conference visited JCHS in January, and the school received its invitation on Feb. 7. Jefferson, Harrison and McCutcheon, all Lafayette-area schools, were also invited.
The Lafayette School Corporation board voted at its Feb. 11 meeting to accept Jefferson’s invitation, and the Tippecanoe School Corporation did the same for McCutcheon and Harrison two days later.
The NCC, which was formed in 1926, currently includes Muncie Central, Richmond, Marion, Huntington North, Anderson, New Castle, Kokomo and Logansport.[[In-content Ad]]
