New animal ID program about control (02/03/06)

Letter to the Editor

To the editor:

Farmers across this state, and others, are now required by law, so they say, to register each and every address that has, or will have in the future, most types of livestock at that address. Government officials will tell you “it is just a phone number and address” so they can contact you.

Government officials will try to paint a pretty picture, that it is a health issue. It is not. If they were concerned about the health of our animals they would be implementing a plan to exterminate every sparrow, starling, and pigeon on our farms.

It is not just about a phone number and address. Once you register your premise you give the government more authority to regulate and control everything that occurs on that premises. It is no different than registering your automobile. If you don’t keep your vehicle properly registered, the government takes away your right to operate that vehicle.

Actually, when you registered, you lost your right and it is now a privilege. If you violate the regulations concerning the operation of that vehicle, you lose the privilege to operate that vehicle. Who of those first citizens that registered their automobile would have thought that the government would force them to wear seat belts? Unthinkable.

Once you register your premises, the government will eventually tell you how, what, when and where you are going to operate your “premise.” But if you don’t break the law you don’t have anything to worry about, right?

What are the laws and regulations? They will eventually want to regulate and control every drop of manure and every drop of water on that premises. It is already happening.

Check it out. Are you ready for that? Will you be able to stay in compliance? Will you be able to afford to stay in compliance? We all know how heavily regulated things are in our lives now. Do you want more of that?

It is not just about a number for your premises. It is about a number for every single animal on every farm (Phase 2). It will require every farmer, which has nothing else to do on a rainy day, to put, and maintain, a tracking device on every single animal on their farm. It is not about tracking every animal in this country. It’s about controlling the movement (Phase 3) of every animal in this country. Effective September of this year, you will have to have the government’s permission to buy and sell any livestock in this state. That is control.

Who is going to pay for all the labor and time to ID your livestock? Who is going to pay for that technology and equipment? Who is going to pay for keeping track (control) of the movement of every animal in this country? The farmers and citizens of the state are.

How much will that cost? They will not tell you. But I believe the state has already budgeted $14 million just to administer this program for this year.

We all know there is no corruption in government. We all know what a wonderful job the government is doing of controlling our lives now. Do you want to invite more of the same?

The premise ID is not just about a phone number and address. It is about controlling everything that occurs on our premise. Do not be deceived. Find an alternate source of information and think for yourselves, people.
