FRHS boys basketball
FORT RECOVERY - Almost.
Chasing the New Bremen Cardinals in the final minutes of a see-saw contest, Fort Recovery came up short 48-46 Friday night. It played the game without leading scorer Greg Kahlig.
The Indians out-shot the visitors in the first half, but couldn't sustain the same success rate in the second. Hitting 56 percent of their field goals in the first half, the Indians could only hit 39 percent in the second and only 2-of-9 attempts from 3-point range.
The 12-7 Indians were led by Toby Metzger and Brent Faller, each of whom scored 13. Craig Tobe had nine points and Frank Thien had seven, including a jumper at the buzzer to bring the Indians within two points.
Justin Eilerman had the hot hand for New Bremen, hitting 8-of-11 field-goal attempts to end up with 17. Three New Bremen players - Marcus Bergman, Andy Timmerman and Aaron Clune - had seven apiece.
New Bremen jumped out to an early lead on a fast start, going ahead 11-5 at the end of the first quarter. But the Indians clicked into gear in the second period, outscoring New Bremen 17-12 to make it 23-22 in New Bremen's favor at the half.
The Indians also had trouble getting in synch in the third period, as New Bremen opened a 33-28 lead.
That proved to be enough, despite Fort Recovery's 18 fourth-quarter points.
Rebounds may have ultimately spelled the difference on the night. New Bremen pulled down 29, while Fort Recovery had just 15.
In junior varsity action, Shane Brunswick and Jason Pottkotter each scored five points as the Tribe lost 41-27 to New Bremen.
