New leader for JC girls

JCHS girls basketball

"In the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association, he's considered one of the top young minds in the game," said Ted Habegger.

It's that kind of endorsement that helped Lucas Cummings stand out in a strong field of candidates for the Jay County High School girls basketball coaching job.

He will be recommended to the Jay School Board for that position at its regular meeting May 18.

Reached by phone this morning, Cummings said he did not want to comment until the school board makes its decision.

The 1998 Kokomo High School graduate has spent the last three seasons as the boys basketball coach at East Noble High School in Kendallville. He teaches social studies there, and will also teach at JCHS. He has also coached boys basketball at Adams Central, and was an assistant coach at Kokomo, Eastern and Lewis Cass.

Habegger said Cummings' coaching skills as well as his proven ability in building feeder programs were keys in his selection.

"We have a group of young ladies that are very talented," Habegger said this morning.

"We wanted somebody that would come in and not only do a great job this year, but do a great job in the future."

Cummings has a 46-61 record in five seasons coaching high school boys basketball. He was 35-30 in three years at East Noble, producing his best season with a 16-6 mark in 2006-07.

He will take over for Kirk Comer, who resigned April 6 and will coach at Winchester next season. The Patriots went 18-1 in 2008-09, completing a perfect regular season before falling to Fort Wayne South Side in the semifinal round of the sectional tournament.

"We think he has a great knowledge of the game of basketball," said Habegger, noting that Cummings is planning to meet with the JCHS team Tuesday. "He's been noted for taking kids and reaching the fullest potential in them."

Clint Anderson of the Berne Tri-Weekly News covered Cummings' teams when he was at Adams Central, and describes the coach as a 24/7, 365 basketball man who is known for his zone defense.

"He is all business about basketball," said Anderson. "I think he gets the most out of what he's got."

Cummings earned his bachelor's degree at Indiana University - Kokomo and his master's degree at IPFW.

He was selected from a field of seven finalists, three of whom had college coaching experience. The selection committee included Habegger, principal Phil Ford, assistant principal/dead of students Chad Dodd, boys basketball coach Craig Teagle and three members of the school board.

"We had top quality candidates," said Habegger. "The field was extremely good."[[In-content Ad]]
