New prep program set at library
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
This summer at Jay County Public Library we will embark on a new educational endeavor in conjunction with Jay Schools, and sponsored by The Portland Foundation and Friends of JCPL.
KiPS, or Kindergarten Prep School, is designed for students entering kindergarten in the fall. All children who were eligible in Jay County could sign up for this program, although all slots are filled. Its purpose is to help prepare the student academically and socially for the kindergarten classroom. Students will be taught art, reading, math, fine motor skills, large motor skills and writing.
In addition to the many volunteers who have stepped up for this program, materials are needed to help the children learn.
School supplies such as glue, scissors, crayons, pencils, school boxes, etc., will be used repeatedly during the program and will need to be replenished often. Monetary donations and donations of supplies are being sought.
Noble County runs a similar KiPS program and has noticed a great increase in the success of its kindergarten students during the following school year. They also won a national award for creating the program. We think that Jay County can also run a successful program — especially if the community embraces our project.
The program will be held on Tuesday mornings, June 14-August 16. Traffic around the library will be heavy at the 9 a.m. drop-off and noon pick-up times, and school buses will also be dropping off children. Inside, the program will be held primarily in the children’s end, but noise will migrate throughout the library as children move from one area to another. If you’re seeking a normal, quiet library experience, you might want to skip a Tuesday morning visit.
For more information, contact me at (260) 726-7890.
Sincerely,
Linda Shreve, youth
