Newton deserves praise (12/04/2008)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

Jay County voters and taxpayers were finally heard on Nov. 4. The referendum process that other states have enjoyed for years is now in Indiana. Taxpayers now have a tool to keep overspending local politicians in check.

The new jail was a hot topic this fall. Whether you were for it or against it, everyone had to admit our county needs it. I was in the administration and booking area this past summer and it was overcrowded and obsolete. Our jail was built for 1984, not the 21st century.

Sheriff (Ray) Newton showed great leadership in his pursuit for a new jail. He wants what is best for his department and Jay County. If he wasn't fighting for a new jail, deputies, support staff and other department benefits, he would be failing at the duties he was elected to do. His approach was a bit unusual. He actually worked to present the need for a new jail to the powers that be: The people.

He made his case to the county commissioners, county council, conducted tours and worked to put a yea or nay on the Nov. 4 ballot, even though he knew there was a good possibility it would be defeated.

He didn't sneak in the back door like a thief in the night like the school board did, he brought the need to the people. Imagine that.

Although I loathe high taxes, this isn't fluff. It's a true need. Congrats to Sheriff Newton.

Great care

To the editor:

In October I had reason to enjoy a stay at the Jay County Hospital. I was there just shy of three weeks in the swing bed program.

I just had to write and let the community know what a great hospital we have right here in our own backyard. The newly-remodeled facility is amazing. The single-bed rooms were private and comfortable. The greatest facility in the world is nothing without a great group of people running it. I would like to thank Dr. Mark Haggenjos, all the nurses, PCTs, therapists, cooks, housekeeping, and everyone in the emergency room. I was treated with great respect, care and concern.

I would like to thank everyone that sent cards, flowers, food, good thoughts and prayers. I am deeply touched.

We are truly lucky to have a facility like that in Jay County.

Thanks again to all.
