A pair of local graduates played major roles in a blowout for the University of St. Francis softball team April 15.
South Adams graduate Carrie Nichols and Fort Recovery graduate Sarah Schmitz each ripped a double as the Cougars routed Goshen College 9-0 in the opening game of their double-header.
Nichols finished 2-for-2 with a couple of RBIs and a run. Schmitz had a run and an RBI.
Nichols, a junior, also played well in a pair of losses to Defiance April 17 and a double-header sweep of Grace College April 18.
She opened the day against Defiance by going 2-for-3 with a couple of RBIs and added a single and an RBI in game two. She finished with two hits two RBIs and a run in game one against Defiance, and also notched an RBI in the second game.
Mitch Waters
Jay County - 2002
Denied Defiance victory as he stayed perfect on the season.
Waters tossed in relief for the Manchester College baseball team April 14 against Defiance, getting the win in two innings of work to improve to 5-0. He gave up a run on a walk and four hits while striking out two.
He came off the bench again against Defiance April 15, giving up just a hit and a walk in 21/3 scoreless innings. All of the seven outs he recorded came by strikeout.
Waters is having a banner season, having already snapped the school’s single-season saves record for four set by Joel Barrus in 2000. His six saves ranked him second in the nation in the NCAA’s Division III, and he still has at least 11 games remaining.
Kim Abbott
Jay County - 2002
Shot matching rounds as the University of Indianapolis women’s golf team competed at the Illinois Spring Classic April 14.
Abbott finished with a 91 in the first round and repeated that score in the second for a 182 total. The Greyhounds were 15th in the 16-team event.
Jill Roughia
Jay County - 2005
Scored one of the five victories for the Huntington University women’s track team, which finished third behind visiting Bethel and Manchester April 13.
Roughia dominated the 3,000-meter steeplechase, finish more than 20 seconds ahead of teammate Molly Andrews in 12-minutes, 49.91 seconds.
She was also sixth in the 5,000 run with a time of 21:25.45.
Pete Martin
South Adams - 2002
Teamed with Blake Babcock for a fourth-place finish in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships at No. 2 doubles for the Bluffton University men’s tennis team.
Martin and Babcock dropped their opening match against a duo from Transylvania, but rallied to win their next to finish fourth. They won over Mount St. Joseph 8-3 in the second round, and knocked off Manchester 8-4 in their final match.
Martin was fifth in his individual action at No. 4 singles, starting with a 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (7-5) win over Manchester’s Josh Sollenberger before losing in the second and third rounds.
Jenny Lehman
South Adams - 2004
Competed in a pair of races for the Bluffton University women’s track team, which placed 15th out of 21 teams at the All-Ohio Track and Field Division III Championships at Ohio Wesleyan University April 14.
Lehman teamed with senior Rita Muether and freshmen Ashley Smith and Chantel Mangrum to place 14th in the 4x100-meter relay in 52.97 seconds, exactly one second better than their seed time. She was also 18th in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.89 seconds.
Heath Williams

Had a huge day for the Ancilla College baseball team as it swept a double-header April 15 over Lansing College 2-1 and 12-9.
Williams finished with six hits in the double header. The biggest of those was a two-run double in the final inning of game two as the Charger scored three times in the frame to break a tie and take the victory.

Carded the No. 3 score for the University of St. Francis men’s golf team at the Region 8 Preview Monday and Tuesday.
Foster played rounds of 87 back-to-back at Rock Hollow Golf Club in Peru for his total of 174. He finished in a tie for 21st at the six-team event.
He had rounds of 84 and 83 for a 167 at the Bill Gettig Invitational April 14.[[In-content Ad]]
