No. 1 Coldwater rolls over Indians (10/23/04)
FRHS football
FORT RECOVERY — By the time the home team came up with something exciting for its fans, time — and hope — had almost run out.
Fort Recovery, which hoped to bring life to a frustrating season with a solid effort against the top-ranked Division IV team in Ohio, gave up 35 first half points as it was beaten 49-6 by Coldwater Friday at Barrenbrugge Athletic Park.
The Indians drop to 1-8 heading into Friday’s season finale at St. Henry, while the Cavaliers stretched their perfect record to 9-0.
Fort Recovery, trailing 49-0 late in the third quarter, avoided a shutout with a 54-yard TD pass to Dusty Guggenbiller from Tyler Wuebker on the final play of the period. It was the first touchdown of Guggenbiller’s career.
Coldwater, which grabbed a 10-0 lead midway through the first quarter, blew it open with a 25-point blitz in the second — a stretch that included a pair of 39-yard touchdown passes from quarterback Steve Borger (to Ryan Gerlach and Ross Homan). Borger added another touchdown pass — ironically, also from 39 yards out — in the third quarter.
The Cavs also scored on Homan’s 6-yard run in the first, a 30-yard field goal from Trevor Stromblad, an 11-yard run and a 39-yard TD reception from Craig Wellman and a 16-yard scoring pass to Justin Kahlig from Sam Slavik.
Coldwater racked up 398 yards in total office (including 211 yards on 38 rushing attempts). The Indians were limited to 148 yards on the night — including 80 on the ground and 68 yards passing.
Coldwater had zero turnovers, while the Indians lost two fumbles and one interception.
Wuebker was Fort’s leading rusher on the night with 47 yards on 13 carries. He was also 2-for-7 passing for 61 yards — including the 54 yard completion to Guggenbiller.[[In-content Ad]]
