NEW BREMEN, Ohio — Every Fort Recovery volleyball player on the roster made her first appearance in a sectional championship match Saturday. But they just couldn’t forge a second classic match in the finals and give the Tribe a chance at knocking off the top-ranked team in the state.

The No. 1 St. Henry Redskins disposed of the Indians 15-9, 15-4 in the first of two sectional championship matches at New Bremen Saturday. Fort Recovery had been eliminated in the first round in each of the previous three seasons.

In the other sectional title match the Marion Local Flyers (18-6) scored a 15-13, 15-7 upset over the second-ranked Minster Wildcats (21-2). The Flyers and the Redskins will return to New Bremen Tuesday night for their district semifinal match at 7 p.m.

Fort Recovery (16-8) made it to the finals on the power of a fairly easy 15-6, 15-10 win over the New Knoxville Rangers (4-18). But when St. Henry opened a lead late in the first game the Indians had no answer.

“Christy (Schwartz) was serving at the end of game one and got quite a few points,” said St. Henry coach Lori Schwieterman, whose team barely squeaked by Fort Recovery in their regular-season meeting 17-15, 16-14. “From there we got the momentum.”

Schwieterman had a hand in starting the run, calling a timeout after Fort Recovery had scored three straight points to tie the first game at 8-8. The Tribe would score just one point in the rest of the game, and five in the rest of the match.

Nicole Elking served the first two points, and after a few side outs Schwartz took control.

She scored her first three points with the help of Lindsay Puthoff, who rejected a Joscie Kaup tip try and then nailed down two kills for the 13-8 lead. An ace off of Jennalee Post put St. Henry within one point of the game before Julie Grube gave Fort Recovery a chance with a kill to end the streak.

Joscie Kaup knocked an ace off of Elking’s face to cut the lead to 14-9, but that was all the Tribe could muster. Puthoff took the serve back with a kill for a side out and then finished the game 15-9 with a tip out of bounds off the Indians’ block.

“My girls didn’t have it today fundamentally,” said Fort Recovery coach Jackie Kaup. “I don’t know what else to say. We played hard, we tried hard, we just didn’t have it today.”

The second game was never close, with the Redskins putting together back-to-back five-point runs to put the match in their grasp.

First Puthoff served five straight points, getting two kills from Lindsay Hess and two Fort Recovery attack errors as she built a 7-2 lead for the Redskins. Then it was Kim Hess serving five in a row — three on stuff blocks by Lindsay Hess — to push the lead to 12-2 on the way to the 15-4 victory.

Kaup tried calling timeouts during both runs, but it was to no avail. The Indians had absolutely no luck against St. Henry’s blockers, who had four stuffs in a stretch of 10 serves.

The Tribe did not earn a point on its own in the final game, scoring all four on attack errors by the Redskins.

“The girls just did a great job blocking,” said Schwieterman, complimenting just about every player who worked the front line. “I think that was kind of the final thing we could do to keep the momentum.”

Joscie Kaup was the team leader in assists, digs and points as she and Julie Grube, Briget Metzger, Jenn Stahl, Renee Schmackers, Lindsay Gaerke and Steff Westgerdes closed their volleyball careers with the Indians. Kaup had 12 assists, seven digs and five points, as well as two kills.

Junior Krystal Rammel and freshman Tiff Gaerke shared a team-high with three kills, and Post had three points. Stahl had three blocks, Metzger had two blocks and Schmackers added four digs.

All-MAC team

The Midwest Athletic Conference released its All-League volleyball honorees Friday.

Leading the Fort Recovery players who were recognized was Joscie Kaup. She was the lone first-team selection for the Indians.

Julie Grube, Jenn Stahl and Briget Metzger earned second-team honors. Krystal Rammel received honorable mention.[[In-content Ad]]
