No. 1 Versailles pounds Fort Recovery (09/18/04)

FRHS football

FORT RECOVERY — A home field match-up against the top-ranked team in Division IV didn’t look too bad on the stat sheet.

The scoreboard? That was another matter.

The Fort Recovery Indians, playing host Friday to the No. 1 Versailles Tigers at Barrenbrugge Athletic Park, gave up a flurry of third quarter points as Versailles broke open a close game pulled away for a 40-0 victory.

The Tigers were limited to 300 yards in total offense (to Fort’s 194) and led just 7-0 at half-time.

But Versailles added a second score less than two minutes into the second half on a 1-yard run by Russ Beisner, and scored two more times in the final 2:01 of the period to turn a close game into a blowout.

A 13 yard scoring run by Curtis Wourms at 2:01 of the third period put the Tigers ahead 19-0, and Matt Murphy hauled in a 27 yard scoring pass from Tony McNeilan just 68 seconds later.

McNeilan also passed Versailles to a first quarter lead, as he connected from 42 yards out with Stephen Winner.

Fort Recovery quarterback Mark Willman had a night of mixed success passing the football. He completed 7-of-14 attempts for 125 yards on the night, but was also picked off three times by the Versailles defense.

Willman’s longest completion went for 71 yards to Tyler Wuebker. Back Greg Faller had three receptions for 32 yards, while Dusty Guggenbiller caught three passes for 22 yards.

Faller was the leading rusher for the Indians on the night with 48 yards on 15 carries.

Fort Recovery will be back in action Saturday, Sept. 25 at Lima Central Catholic. Kick-off is at 7:30 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
