No. 2 Tigers hold off FR (02/14/04)

FRHS boys basketball

FORT RECOVERY — The Indians have a tendency of getting up for Midwest Athletic Conference games. That seems the likely explanation for Friday night.

The Fort Recovery boys basketball team took the undefeated Division III No. 2 Versailles Tigers to the wire Friday, but still lost at home 78-71.

The Tribe battled Versailles hard all the way, but was done it at the foul line and by its inability to take care of the ball.

The Tigers (16-0, 7-0 MAC) finished 23-of-27 at the foul line, taking 16 more free throw attempts than the home team. They also had just nine turnovers compared to 11 for Fort Recovery (4-12, 2-5 MAC).

Versailles went up 25-19 in the first quarter of the high-scoring contest, but the Indians were within four points at halftime. The lead jumped back to eight points with eight minutes to play, and Fort Recovery could not rally as it managed just 39 percent from the field in the second half.

The Indians had put up a 59 percent mark before the intermission.

Joe Shardo paced four Tigers in double figures with 22 points. He also had seven rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Kyle Gehle scored 20 points to go along with highs six assists and five rebounds. Ryan McNeilan notched 11 points, Adam Barga had 10 and Ben Shappie just missed double figures with nine.

John Bihn match Shardo for game-high honors with 22 points. He added 10 rebounds for a double-double as the Indians took a 33-25 advantage on the glass.

Bihn is nearly averaging a double-double for the year as he has 12.6 points and 9.6 rebounds per contest.

Dusty Tobe followed Bihn with 14 points, and Travis VanSkyock added 13.

Tyler Wuebker had six rebounds, six assists and three steals while Tobe grabbed five boards and dished out four assists.

Greg Faller had a team-high seven assists to go along with his nine points.

Fort Recovery will host Houston Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Junior varsity

The Indians couldn’t do much of anything right in the second half of their junior varsity contest Friday, falling to a 44-25 defeat against Versailles.

Fort Recovery trailed just 20-16 at halftime before completely self-destructing in the second half. It shot just 14.3 percent after the break as it was outscored 24-9.

The Tribe also turned the ball over 20 times.

The Tigers on the other hand had just 12 turnovers overall and shot 59 percent in the second half.

Clint Hufford had 12 points, four rebounds and three assists as three Versailles players reached double figures. Jeremy Shardo finished with 11 points, and Jayson White added 10.

Matt Murphy racked up an impressive eight steals.
