FORT RECOVERY — The Marion Local girls basketball team beat Fort Recovery Thursday night. Neither it nor any other team wants any part of trying to do it again.

The Flyers — the defending Division IV state champions and the No. 3 team in The Associated Press poll — barely fought off the Tribe for a 50-45 victory.

“I’m not a big guy for moral victories,” said Fort Recovery coach Jeff Roessner, who said the biggest disappointment was that the loss knocked his team out of contention for the Midwest Athletic Conference title. “But, if you look at this game, we’re almost good. I guarantee we gave them all they wanted tonight.”

Marion Local (10-1, 5-0 MAC) trailed for the first 21 minutes of the contest but came back with great defense. The Flyers weren’t very good from the foul line for much of the contest, but made eight of their final 12 free throws to seal the win.

“We were down by 12 at one point,” said Marion Local coach Treva Fortkamp. “The girls show a lot of heart and character to come back and win this one.

“It was a good heart and soul win for the Flyers. It’s always tough to play here.”

With fans on both sides at a fevered pitch, Fort Recovery (7-6, 2-2 MAC) jumped out to that 12-point lead in the first quarter. But the game quickly become one which lacked much scoring punch on either side.

The Flyers’ defense cracked down, forcing eight third quarter turnovers by the Tribe. That pressure allowed them to tie the game at 21-21 midway through the third quarter, and a dogfight ensued.

The game was tied six times in the final 12 minutes, with the lead changing hands on seven different occasions.

The final tie came with three minutes remaining when Fort Recovery freshman Tiff Gaerke showed incredibly good hands to take a Vicki Roessner pass away from two Marion Local defenders and toss in an easy shot off the glass.

Both teams made just one field goal the rest of the way, but the Flyers managed to win the contest at the foul line. They went up 48-42 before Joscie Kaup hit her fourth 3-pointer of the contest with 45 seconds remaining.

Fort Recovery never scored again, and Maria Moeller and Kelsey Schaefer each split a pair of free throws for the final margin.

Moeller had 15 points, nine rebounds and four assists for Marion Local, all team highs. Jenna Barhorst scored 12 points, and Erin Brand finished with eight.

“We came back and hit ‘em in the end,” said Fortkamp, whose team finished 23-of-40 from the foul line. “I thought we did a good job with the pressure. Early in the second half we got them to turn the ball over a few times.”

The Tribe built a 14-2 lead with Kaup, Roessner, Jenn Stahl, Holly Stein and Megan Wenning all getting in on the scoring act. However, after Gaerke made the lead 18-11 with 2:20 to play in the second half the offensive well went dry.

Fort Recovery did not score a point for more than seven minutes before Kaup finally hit a 3-pointer with 3:13 to play in the third quarter.

Roessner blamed the offensive problems on a lack of patience.

“I just think we didn’t show enough composure on the offensive end,” said Roessner, whose team shot 23 percent from the field. “I have to give (Marion Local) credit for that. My gosh that’s a tough team.”

The Indians’ shooting numbers were actually just slightly better than Marion Locals’ (22.8 percent), but the Flyers shot twice as many free throws. Fort Recovery outworked its much taller opponent on the glass 56-46, but also turned the ball over 21 times.

Most of the Tribe’s offense went through Kaup, who was its lone player in double figures with 23 points. Gaerke finished with seven points, and Roessner added six.

Krystal Rammel notched a career-high 12 rebounds, Gaerke added nine and Kaup finished with eight. Roessner had five rebounds and five assists.

The loss ended a five-game winning streak by the Indians. They will try to get another one started when they visit Fort Loramie Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Junior varsity

Fort Recovery dominated the junior varsity contest in a 51-14 victory over Marion Local Thursday.

The Indians took a 13-0 lead after the first quarter and cruised to the win. Marion Local managed nine second-quarter points, but scored just two in the third and three in the fourth.

Tiff Gaerke paced a balanced scoring effort for the Tribe with nine points. She also shared a team high with Sara Fortkamp with four rebounds.

Tami Jutte put in seven points, and Fortkamp also had five assists.[[In-content Ad]]
