A run to close the third quarter got the Patriots back in the game. But they couldn’t sustain the momentum.
The visiting Class 3A No. 5 Concordia Cadets scored the first five points of the final period and held strong the rest of the way for a 42-30 victory over the Jay County High School girls basketball team.
Back-to-back 3-pointers by Alex Loy and Kassi Hemmelgarn followed by a steal and basket from Catherine Dunn pulled the Patriots (5-2) to within 28-23 at the end of the third quarter. But Concordia scored on a put-back bucket on its first possession of the final period, and then got a 3-pointer from Lauren Marinko to push its advantage back to double digits.
‘They took the shot we wanted, and we didn’t block out,” said JCHS coach Chris Krieg. “We can’t out-rebound anybody without blocking out.”
The Cadets (4-1) led by at least nine points the rest of the way, with Marinko scoring a game-high 14. Breanne Smith joined her in double figures with 10 points, and Courtney Smith scored six.
“We weren’t as sharp as I hoped we would be,” said Concorida coach Dave Miller. “But at the same time, you’ve got to credit Jay County for a lot of that. I thought that they took a lot of things away from us ...”
Jay County, which had won five in a row, trailed just 10-7 despite seven first-quarter turnovers. But it scored just two second-quarter points and struggled to find consistent offense most of the night.
Maria Murphy paced the Patriots with 10 points and four rebounds. Hemmelgarn, Aker and Dunn each added five points, and Mariah Hornaday grabbed nine rebounds.
