FRHS boys basketball
FORT RECOVERY - Monday evening the Indians picked up another couple of spots in the state poll. A couple of hours later they clawed back for a victory against their nearest rival.
After trailing for almost the entire second half, Greg Kahlig gave the Division IV No. 5 Fort Recovery High School boys basketball team the lead with just 28 seconds left as it knocked off the St. Henry Redskins 48-46.
The Tribe (14-1), which was ranked seventh last week, fell behind on a Jordan Post 3-pointer on the final play of the opening half and was behind for the first 15:32 of the second half. But Kahlig's baseline jumper with 28 seconds on the clock put the Indians up 47-46.
Freshman Wade Gelhaus came up with a steal on the ensuing possession, and Craig Tobe split a pair of free throws with seven seconds. A 3-point attempt by Jason Westgerdes at the buzzer missed the mark as Fort Recovery stayed unbeaten in the Midwest Athletic Conference at 6-0.
The teams traded dominating quarters Monday, with St. Henry (9-5, 2-4 MAC) taking a 17-8 lead in the first period before the Indians pushed ahead by as many as four in the second. The Redskins pushed back to a six-point lead at the end of the third quarter, but Fort Recovery scored the first five points of the fourth.
St. Henry extended back to a four-point lead, and was up 46-43 after a pair of Post free throws with 1:22 to go. Gelhaus scored with 1:06 left to cut the Tribe's deficit to one before Kahlig gave the home team the lead for good.
