COLDWATER, Ohio — Maybe two miracle wins in a single week was too much to ask.
Three days after an amazing come-from-behind win that will have Fort Recovery basketball fans talking for years, the Indians nearly knocked off the sectional favorite Friday night.
Playing their scrappiest, most intense defense of the season, the Indians frustrated the New Bremen offensive game, had the lead at the half, then saw victory slip away in the last minute and a half.
“We had them rattled,” coach Brian Patch said after the 45-36 loss. “They’re obviously a good team and came back and made some plays. We did everything we wanted to do game-wise, but we made a few mistakes at the end and they made a few plays.”
The Cardinals (18-3), ninth-ranked in Division IV, hit just 27 percent of their field goal attempts in the first half and just 32 percent for the game.
Despite a loss to New Bremen earlier this season and the fact that the Cardinals are the MAC champion while Fort Recovery didn’t pick up a MAC win until Tuesday, the Indians clearly weren’t intimidated.
“I’m very proud of our kids and their effort,” said Patch. “They came out and played with everything they had.”
Fort Recovery led 8-6 at the end of the first quarter and 20-17 at the half. But the Cardinals battled back in the third, outscoring the Indians 12-8. The fourth quarter saw the score knotted up in the 30s until New Bremen pulled away in the final minute.
The Indians hit 35 percent of their field goal attempts. Both teams pulled down 25 rebounds, with Ryan Staugler grabbing nine for Fort Recovery.
The Indians were led by Travis VanSkyock in the scoring department as he hit 5-of-9 from two-point range and went 6-for-9 at the free-throw line.
Clint Tobe scored seven, Staugler six, Toby Metzger four and Bobby Rammel three.
Most of New Bremen’s scoring came from two players, Brian Schwartz with 17 and Scott Steineman with 15.
“We told our seniors (after the game), ‘Thanks for the great effort,’” said Patch. “They have a lot to be proud of.”[[In-content Ad]]
