FRHS football

MARIA STEIN, Ohio — The Fort Recovery football team fought back from a 21-0 second quarter deficit with a pair of touchdown runs to tighten the score to 21-13 at halftime, but lost to Marion Local Friday 35-13 after failing to score any second-half points.

The Division VI No. 9 Flyers (5-2) jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on 1-yard touchdown runs by Scott Garman and Ryan Stucke. Marion Local extended its lead in the opening minute of the second period when quarterback Cory Leubke hit Brian Wellman on a 77-yard touchdown pass.

The long TD put the Flyers up by three touchdowns with 11:11 left in the first half. With their backs against the wall, the Indians turned to their workhorse to put some points back on the board.

Running back Greg Faller scored on a 5-yard touchdown run with 2:41 left in the first half, and found himself back in the end zone just over two minutes later, scoring from four yards out to pull within 21-13 at the break.

Faller ended the day with 63 yards rushing on 13 carries, and had the two first-half touchdowns.

Fort Recovery kept the score close throughout most of the third period, but the Flyers finally started to pull away on Doug Giere’s 7-yard touchdown run with 36 seconds left in the third. Stucke managed to score another touchdown in the fourth on a run from 18 yards out, giving Marion Local the 35-13 final margin.

Fort Recovery (1-6) failed to mount a comeback and was held scoreless in the second half.

The Flyers kept the ball on the ground for the majority of the game, registering 260 yards rushing on 48 carries. Marion Local passed the ball only 13 times, completing four and totaling 118 yards.

Tribe quarterback Mark Willman improved on his performance from last week. He completed 8-of-23 pass attempts for 172 yards on the night.

The Indians’ leading receiver was Stan Roessner, who hauled in two passes for 85 yards.

Dusty Guggenbiller had four catches for 40 yards.

Fort Recovery finished with 112 yards rushing on 33 attempts.
