The city of Portland received only one bid for construction work on the entrance to the planned Hudson Family Park.
The $160,800 bid from LPI Limestone Products Inc. of Portland was opened this morning by the Portland Board of Works.
Board members Bob McCreery, Dolphus Stephens and Mayor Bruce Hosier voted to have The Schneider Corporation senior architect David Dixon review the bid before deciding if it will be accepted. Schneider is doing the engineering work on the project.
Dixon said this morning he should be ready to make a recommendation on the bid by the end of next week.
The bid includes the cost of earthwork, grading, decorative lighting and the construction of concrete sidewalks, the drive into the park, the replica of the Arch Bridge and a sign for the park entrance.
The entrance, which is phase one of the project, will be built at the site of the former hatchery building, located on South Wayne Street near Union Street. The building has been demolished, but debris is still being hauled away. Dixon said the site should be ready for construction sometime in the next two weeks.
Construction work on the park entrance could take two or three months to complete, he said.
The bid also includes an option of landscaping the entrance for an additional $22,000, and $1,950 to add the city’s logo to the sign. Also, if city officials decided to hire someone else to build the replica of the bridge, $50,600 would be deducted from the construction bid.
Dixon said he thinks the city received only one bid because there are several projects under way in Indiana, and contractors didn’t have the time to take on additional work.
The construction of phase one will be funded by $176,052 of the city’s economic development income tax funds. Also, engineering work on phase one will be funded by $48,280 of the city’s cumulative capital development funds.
The cost to develop the park has been estimated at $3.4 million.[[In-content Ad]]
