Online tax sale planned

Jay County Commissioners

The county's online tax sale is ready to begin in mid-March, with about 80 properties up for auction.

Joe Edwards of SRI Inc. told the Jay County Commissioners that everything is set for an online tax sale, which will begin at 10 a.m. on March 15 and end at 8 p.m. March 30.

The auction, Edwards said, was pushed back a week from the originally planned time due to errors that took place in his office.

"The delay in the sale is strictly from confusion ... in my office," he said. "It was strictly our error."

Buyers will be able to purchase a certificate, which does not mean they immediately own the property.

Certificate-holders must perform a title search, notify lienholders or their intent to take ownership of the property and then go through the legal process to obtain a deed.

The certificate sale, however, allows the buyer to obtain a deed more quickly, which means the properties will potentially return to the county's tax rolls sooner.

The auction will be held at www.sri-auctionsonline.com and a full listing of properties for sale will be advertised in Jay County newspapers three times leading up to the beginning date.

The auction will only take place online and there will be no live auction.

Edwards described the online auction system being used for the county tax sale as "not eBay ... but it's just like eBay."

Minimum bids have been set for the properties, which in most cases is 10 percent of the delinquent amount. Bidding can be done in increments as small as $1.

Like eBay, bidders have the option to place a maximum bid and the system will place bids up to that amount. If a bidder is surpassed, they will receive an e-mail informing them that they have been outbid.

Edwards said once the auction is over, his office will send a spreadsheet with information of all the lots and whether they sold, and if so, with information of the winning bidder. Those winners will have until noon the next day to either make an automatic payment online or stop at the auditor's office to pay in person. Any lots that are not paid for by that time will be offered to the next highest bidder.

In other business this morning, the commissioners:

•Received a complaint from Terry Snyder, rural Bryant, about drainage issues on his property. The commissioners said that county surveyor Brad Daniels was alerted to the issue and that the situation had been addressed.

•Were informed by Sheriff Ray Newton that an employee of the assessor's office was issued a citation for parking in the county-controlled lot near the courthouse. Newton said the employee drove a different vehicle that day without the proper identification and was issued the ticket. Newton said he voided the citation.[[In-content Ad]]
