Open your eyes, take jail tour (10/10/2008)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

I'm writing this letter to urge the people of Jay County to please take advantage of the open house that the Jay County Sheriff's Department is offering. The next and last opportunity you have is Saturday, Oct. 11, from noon to 3 p.m.

I experienced the tour on Oct. 4, and I must tell you it was very eye opening. Before you vote down something that is greatly needed for this community, you should see for yourself how bad the need is there.

Our brave men and women who serve this community are having to share office space that is probably smaller than some of your bathrooms. I live in Jay County and my taxes will be affected also, but my belief is that people who put their lives on the line daily for you and me deserve to have a room where they may work and store their paperwork without having to schedule around another person.

There are so many things that need to be re-done in that jail that the only correct common sense choice is to pass the renovation for the jail.

I personally am tired of all the money in Jay County going to renovate the school. So what, the school looks nice, but it is not improving the level of skills coming from the school.

Larger pools and tennis courts or basketball court are all lavish accessories that are not needed, just wanted by some people.

I'm ashamed of the current condition the jail is in, and if you take pride in your community you should be too. Matt Tarter did my tour and was very knowledgeable and very informative. He answered all our questions. As stated, the renovation is not a want to just build but the need to build. And I can say personally how bad the need is.

Don't take my word or the word of a council member continuously votes no, who probably has a bigger office for one person than our officers do for two or three people.

Before you form your opinion by all the talk from other people about the need, you yourself take pride and go to the open house tour. I guarantee your eyes will be open to the need, and they will show you the plans for the improvements.

As you take the tour, ask yourself this question: How would I like to work in these conditions?

Go, tour on Oct. 11 from noon to 3 p.m.

You need to see for yourself. I know I did, and I'm glad I did, as I'm sure you will be glad you did also.
