Options on county Web site given

Jay County Commissioners

The county is considering putting a new face on its Web site as the Jay County Commissioners heard a presentation this morning from local site developers on overhauling its page.

Mark Clemens of Clemens Communications and Angie Williams of Inspired by Angie, presented the commissioners with a plan to overhaul the county's Web site and replace it with a Content Management System (CMS).

Clemens and Williams are collaborating on the project.

The finished product would be akin to other local sites such as The Portland Foundation and John Jay Center for Learning.

"It was really meant to grow with you, to be updated by you," Clemens said of the county's current site.

The new format would allow the county to manage and update its own content in a user-friendly format, somewhat like managing pages on MySpace or Facebook.

"You will not need us at the end of this process," Clemens assured the commissioners, stating that after training, the site would be able to be completely under the control of the county.

"We're going to build a Web site and show you how to use it."

Clemens pointed out several weaknesses of the current site including outdated information, broken links, links that don't open in a new window, an outdated business directory, no contact page, no sitemap, no community calendar, no news or announcements, no link to Jay Schools, no search function and no information for new residents or new businesses.

The proposed CMS would allow the county to update, change or add new content without affecting the overall design of the page, which minimizes the risk of someone making a mistake that breaks the entire site.

"You can change the design without altering the content," Williams said.

"You can change the content without screwing up the design. It's just very, very user-friendly."

"It really takes the scariness out of managing your Web site," Clemens said.

The CMS site would be created using the Expression Engine, which would create a site easy to use by both administrator and browser as well as provide checks and balances so that users could not make additions without admin approval for sections such as the business directory or community calendar.

Clemens showed the commissioners several examples of sites that operate with similar CMS background including the Town of Ossian, United Way of Wells County and Blackford, Delaware, Adams and Wells counties' sites.

The commissioners did not receive a quote for the proposed work as of this morning, but agreed it would be best to redo the entire site instead of trying to repair the existing page.

In other business this morning, the commissioners:

•Appointed Dr. Jerry Whetzel to the Jay County Board of Health to replace Dr. Scott Frankenfield.

•Heard an update on construction on the Jay County Jail expansion from Jeff Badders of SchenkelShultz. Badders said Weigand Construction will finish laying some of second floor and then will begin on second story exterior walls. Workers will also begin some work in the attic of the existing jail.[[In-content Ad]]
