Papers signed for Redkey work (03/10/2009)
REDKEY - Grant and loan documents allowing a long-awaited water system improvement project to get underway were signed Monday by members of the town council, along with contracts for the $1.65 million project.
Jay County community development director Ami Huffman said the documents were signed in connection with the town's grant from the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs as well as a grant and loan from the United States Department of Agriculture.
Redkey clerk-treasurer Sandy Kirby said that although an exact date was not set, work on the town's major water system improvements is expected to start as soon as weather permits.
These improvements will include construction of a new, larger water storage tank, upgrading of the water plant and the installation of new water mains in various sections of town.
Low bids for these three phases of the project were tentatively awarded, pending approval from state and USDA officials. That approval has now been received.
The three contracts awarded went to Mid States Concrete and General Construction Co., Redkey, for the water plant construction, $516,758; Phoenix Fabricators, Avon, for the elevated storage tank, $655,342; and Brackney Inc., Brookville, for the distribution system improvements, $474,864.
