Parcels will be moved

Jay County Commissioners

The Jay County Commissioners discussed options this morning on how to get more than 80 parcels back on the tax rolls after they failed to move at a recent tax sale.

The commissioners spoke with Joe Edwards of SRI Inc. about what to do about the remaining 83 properties. About 30 properties sold at the tax sale.

"The ultimate goal for all of us ... is to get them back on the tax rolls," Edwards said.

Edwards presented two options to the commissioners including holding a certificate sale or going through the process to obtain deeds to the land and then later attempt to sell those deeds.

The commissioners leaned toward holding a certificate sale, which would mean that a buyer would be responsible for going through the process of obtaining a deed and incurring those expenses. Through this method, the properties, once bought, could be back on the tax rolls in 90 days.

Edwards said SRI could host an Internet auction for the certificate sale, which could draw a wider bidding audience. The commissioners will be able to set the minimum bid on the property at any rate they choose.

The commissioners decided to have photographs of the properties taken so bidders can see the lot or any existing structures that may need to be repaired or torn down.

"It's probably the prudent thing to do," said attorney George Lopez of the photography.

The commissioners will also speak with city and town officials to see whether the municipalities may want to obtain some of the properties. Jay County auditor Nancy Culy said the City of Portland may be interested in a few lots and might have funds available to demolish some dilapidated structures on the sites.

The commissioners held off on signing a contract with SRI until they review the properties and decide what asking prices they'd like to set for the sale.

In other business this morning, the commissioners:

•Approved repairs of a Community Corrections car that was damaged after its driver backed into a pole. The commissioners chose a quote from Hutlzer Collision and Repair, Portland, at a cost of $589.50.[[In-content Ad]]
