Parents, not state, to blame
Editor's Mailbag
By To the editor:-
One day last week (May 10-15) you included an article in your paper with the heading, “Low income kids lose health care.” I assumed that a children’s health care program was cut — a reasonable assumption, I thought.
So, I read the article to see what was going on with children’s health care. This is what it said: “A state policy change that made it HARDER for low-income children to keep receiving free and low-cost government health care insurance has already cost an estimated 30,000 kids their coverage ...”
“Requiring those children’s parents to certify their eligibility for coverage every six months instead of once a year caused the dropouts.”
The article continued this doom and gloom scenario blaming the change in requirements for all the children’s ills. Once again personal responsibility is never expected. I would think if one is receiving help for his or her children you would expect to follow the rules.
So, my point is, some low-income kids do lose health care, but it is due to the neglect of their parents, not the government. We must quit expecting the government to take care of us from the cradle to the grave.
