Park bids open
Portland Baord of Works
The apparent low bid submitted for phase IV of Hudson Family Park came in about $300,000 less than projected.
Bids for the project were opened today at a meeting of the Portland Board of Works. A bid of $1,100,000 was submitted by Mid-States Concrete and General Construction, Redkey, The business also submitted alternates of $99,000 to add a roof to the stage of the amphitheater, and $27,000 to add towers to each side of the stage for lighting and sound equipment.
The most recent estimate for this phase of the park project was $1,433,100.63 - an estimate that included the towers and a back wall but not the roof.
The bids will be reviewed by the Portland Park Board Tuesday at 7 p.m., and the contract likely will be awarded when the board of works meets Thursday, June 10 at 10 a.m.
The city is in the process of bonding for this phase of the project, and cannot bond for more than the cost of the work.

The contractors will have four months to complete the work. Included in the base bid for this phase of the park project is installation of playground equipment, construction of a picnic shelter, adding a back wall to the amphitheater stage, stone wall seating for the amphitheater, a restroom/concession stand/ticket booth building for the amphitheater and landscaping. The paved trail system also will be extended throughout the park.
Also this morning, board members voted to hire Portland resident Mike Weitzel as a full time firefighter for the city, pending the results of physical and psychological evaluations.
He is replacing Jim Wehrly, who resigned as a firefighter on April 16, due to a pending criminal case against him. Wehrly surrendered to police April 19.
Weitzel, 35, has been a volunteer for the Portland Fire Department for about two-and-a-half years. He is married with two children and currently works for Jay Emergency Medical Service and Nature's Green Nursery, Fort Recovery. He is a Fort Recovery native.
Board members also chose Dustin Hilfiker as an alternate for the job if Weitzel should fail either of his evaluations.[[In-content Ad]]
