Pastor renews call for revival (04/29/08)
Letter to the Editor
To the editor:
Since my first letter to the editor was published a month ago, many good reports have been heard concerning the topic of revival.
Because there are so many churches in Jay County that believe in praying for revival, the possibilities are extremely high of seeing an old-fashioned movement of the Holy Spirit.
In 1929, the Charles A. Fisher evangelistic party came from Los Angeles. The Rev. Fisher believed the Lord spoke to him and told him there would be a revival here. The Fishers arrived by airplane on July 13, 1929, to conduct a campaign to win souls for Christ and pray for the sick. When the green arrived, they circled the city before landing at Brigham Field, east of the fairgrounds.
Rev. Fisher was amongst the pioneers to carry the gospel by the latest mode of travel at the time. Forty parachutes were dropped as the plane circled the city. On one of those was printed the word "Bible." The finder had to bring the parachute to the revival to get a free Bible.
The revival that started in July 1929 quickly got out of man's control. This particular campaign lasted 23 weeks. Fisher had no intentions of staying here more than four weeks. But the revival grew to such proportions that it became impossible to leave. Hundreds of sick people came for healing as the evangelists preached that Christ could heal the same as He did when on earth.
Why is it that we don't see great healing revivals today or hear of miracles? Maybe it's because the churches of Jay County have become too modern and grown lukewarm? What do you think?
One of many outstanding features of the Portland revial was the way the churches came together for the meetings. No name tags in the revival but clear proclamation that it's not about "our church" or "our doctrine" but about the power of Jesus to change a life.
How many people today are bound by drugs, alcohol, depression and spirits that drive people to suicide, the same as in 1930 when the Great Depression hit? People needed a higher power back then and we need the Lord God Almighty today.
Is your church experiencing revival yet? Remember, I said in my first letter that in May 2007 the Spirit spoke and promised to pour out a revival spirit on Jay County beginning this year.
All churches need revival; every believer needs a closer walk. However, if the pastors shun the idea and quench the moving of His Spirit, then the people will go home unfed and starving. Pastors, we need to get down on our faces and repent and turn from our wicked ways. Our sermons are boring, and no one is getting saved in our services.
Wake up, people. Understand, it is high time to know how close we are to the Mark of the Beast and tribulation. Some friends of D.L. Moody went to him after many sermons he had preached and told him he needed the infilling of the Spirit. It made him disgruntled, but it shook him from his pedestal and he shut the door behind him and prayed until his heart was purified and empowered. It changed his whole ministry.
It isn't only ministers that need to repent. There are many good church members who keep the commandments and give God a percent, but they have absolutely no personal relationship with Jesus.
Brothers and sisters, start a revival in your church. Start praying for the Lord to visit your church again. You may need to give Him directions since it's been awhile since he's been to your church.
The 1930 revival crossed all denominational boundaries. The Lord is not impressed with your church name. He is interested in getting back to Jay County and finishing what he started. The Lord is interested in the salvation of lost souls.
In the tabernacle revival, people went to church every night for weeks and twice or three times on Sunday and they were begging for more. Today, it seems church people have Brylcream religion: "A little dab will do ya."
Are you awake? This is your wake-up call. It's time to allow the Holy Spirit to finish what He started through the Fishers and all the good people of the Gospel Tabernacle. Those days are gone, but here comes the Holy Spirit back to knock on our door. Will the churches and believers of Jay County allow this revival to take place?
He is watching and He is waiting.
Sincerely,
Phill Jellison
