The Patriots finished strong.
While classes have been out for weeks, the Jay County High School spring sports season just came to a close Friday with Evan Mathias competing at the regional golf tournament. His 79 at The Players Club, just three strokes short of earning a trip to the state finals, capped an all-around effort for which the Patriots can be proud.
The Jay County softball and baseball teams each turned in winning seasons.
Softball did it by overcoming a 2-5 start to win 11 of its next 17 games before falling to state-ranked Huntington North in the sectional tournament.
For baseball, it was the first winning season since going 25-3 in 2008.
The boys golf team went 11-2 in duals and was at its best in the sectional tournament.
It posted its best 18-hole score of the season at Timber Ridge Golf Course to just three strokes away from earning a regional berth for the second straight year.
And a three-day run May 14 through 16 highlighted the season as the Patriots brought home three sectional championships.
It started with the one championship that never seemed to be in doubt as the Jay County girls track team had already dominated all of its top sectional rivals.
Senior Katie Snyder won two sectional titles to lead an effort that saw the Patriots put two athletes in the top five in eight different events as they finished 49 points ahead of runner-up Yorktown.
A day later, Jessica Kerrigan played the hero when she stepped into the lineup for the girls tennis team at the last minute and earned the No. 3 singles victory that lifted JCHS to a sectional semifinal win.
That set the stage for a two-title day.
First, the Patriot netters won on their home courts 5-0 over the Randolph Southern Rebels for their first sectional title since 2001.
And then the JCHS boys track team fought off defending champion and host Muncie Central with late victories from the 4x400-meter relay team and Tyler Back in the shot put.
With two sectional championships in a day, three in a week and winning seasons from its other three teams, Jay County closed 2012-13 on a high note.
The Patriots should be proud, and motivated to keep the momentum going when everything gets started again in the fall.
