Pay no heed to self-help advice (4/16/03)
To the editor:
Let me start out by saying this is not your normal letter to the editor. I’m not complaining about schools, politics or the streets of Jay County. I’m writing a warning about all those “self-help” books on relationships and how they can ruin a relationship and your own life.
I met Diann at JCHS in Mr. Orr’s freshmen biology class and from the first day I knew she was special, but I also knew that someone like me had no chance of being with someone so smart and beautiful. So we were friends through high school and lost track right after school.
A while back I ran into Diann in the mall. My heart dropped. She was more precious than I remembered. We talked for a few minutes and exchanged e-mail addresses and said bye. I ran home to e-mail her and we met for lunch a few times, realized we were both single, and the moment I had waited for over 10 years was now a reality — we were going on a date.
We developed into a great relationship, and I didn’t want to blow this chance, so I bought a book on relationships. One passage said to buy a journal and put false information in with the true information, judge their reaction and you’ll know their true feelings.
What this book does not tell you is how hurt you feel when your partner leaves upset and mad, and worse, not trusting you.
I hurt Diann, her two great children, and her great family. The journal may have had false information, but my feelings for her and the children were never false. If anything, I didn’t tell her enough how I felt but I’m not sure there are words to explain my happiness when I was with her. That’s how I can say I have loved in the past but I will never love in the future, because she was my future.
On Thursday, April 17 between 9 and 9:45 p.m. I will make a public apology on 95.5 WFMS radio. By doing this I hope and pray I can help at least one person with their relationship. Go with your feelings and not with self-help books.
Diann, I hope you and your family can forgive me. Portland and Jay County are very lucky to have you in their lives.
