Pennville resident upset over manure (10/11/07)

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

I am one not to complain of any type of problems that go on in Jay County. I am writing this since I am a concerned citizen and a very angry resident.

There have been numerous concerns in the Commercial Review about the spreading and foul smell of the hog farms. I wasn't going to complain about my road being closed off for the work that the Jay County REMC was doing in cutting trees and replacing the poles on my road.

The fact they had the road closed out here Friday, October 5, 2007 for doing replacement work wasn't so bad, but then the problem came when the road stayed closed all night long so the farmer who had a hog farm two miles away could have his eight or 10 inch hose run across the road to spread his hog manure on his field.

While he had his hose ran across the road, he spilled hog manure all over the road. Why should we have to drive two miles out of our way just so we can be able to go to town and pay our bills while this farmer can have that hose spread across the road way just for his convenience?

Is there anything that can be done with the way that they are spreading the manure and being able to keep our road closed, and then having a spill of this smelly mess?

We use to have a nice and sweet smelling area where we live, but now we have this nasty smell of hogs, and you can't even have your windows open so you can have nice fresh air flowing through the house.

It just makes you feel like you are a prisoner on your own property, having to stay inside so you don't have to gag from the smell.

Thank you,

Fay Moles
