People should pass amendment
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
There are two ways of governing: the old way and the new way.
The old way:
The laws in America — the Constitution of the United States and the Declaration of Independence — were simple and beautiful. They were written with care, and citizens could read them quickly and understand them and their meaning. The Northwest Ordinance, adopted in 1787 and passed again in 1789, contains the following beautiful sentence: “Religion, morality and knowledge being necessary for good government and happiness of mankind, the means of education shall forever be encouraged.”
The Constitution placed sovereignty in the hands of the people outside the government, which means the only way we the people can maintain our sovereignty — the only way we can control the government — is through elections of our representatives.
Here in Indiana, the voters are in control of amending the Indiana Constitution if so passed by our Indiana lawmakers — to vote it up or down — such as House Joint Resolution 3, the marriage amendment.
Please call or write your state legislators and ask them to let the people maintain their sovereignty by passing HJR 3.
Our money says, “In God We Trust”. Is God’s way the old way or is it the new way — “humanism’s” man’s way.
In summary, the Constitution itself remains the source of authority for those in and out of government. To read the Constitution but not understand the sovereignty of the people is of no value.
We the people are in jeopardy. It is in jeopardy because the government has grown beyond constitutional bounds of limited sovereignty government.
Hopefully our Indiana Constitution will be enforced and the sovereignty of the people will remain safe by passing the marriage amendment.
Thank you very much,
Paul F. Double
