Person responsible for this mess truly sick (03/30/07)

Editorial

What is it about ravines and the urge to dump garbage?

For years, we've thought that stretch of Spooky Hollow Road between 600 South and 700 South was one of the prettiest drives in Jay County.

In autumn, it's about as close to being in Brown County as you're likely to find in east central Indiana.

But for reasons we can't begin to comprehend, it's also long been a target for idiots too lazy, too cheap, and too stupid to dump their trash in.

This month's example is by far the most egregious.

With hundreds of skinned animal carcasses tossed down the ravine and into a creek, it was disgusting in the extreme.

Likely the work of a trapper, it was also the work of a criminal. Mixed in among the wild animal carcasses were plenty of dogs - household pets - that had apparently been trapped, killed, and skinned, their hides and pelts probably mixed in with something marketable.

That takes a pretty sick mind. So, too, does dumping the mess on the property of another, fouling the landscape.

Now, thanks to the county and a volunteer by the name of Shawn Wible, it's been cleaned up.

Along the way, crews working on the cleanup found plenty of other junk and litter left by previous idiots.

The real shame is that if the perpetrator were actually caught and brought before a judge, he'd merely face a fine. True justice would come up with something much more fitting. - J.R.[[In-content Ad]]
