Petition to slow project submitted (06/18/07)
By By JENNIFER TARTER-
An effort to slow down construction of a proposed $4 million multipurpose facility/auxiliary gym at Jay County High School appears likely to succeed.
Five petitions containing a total of 125 signatures of Jay County real property (land) owners or residents hoping to push the project into a remonstrance process were turned into the Jay County Clerk's office this morning.
The petitions, dropped off by Portland resident James R. Sanders, 420 E. Votaw St., will first be verified in the clerk's office for up to 15 days before going to the Jay County Auditor's office for the remaining names to be validated for up to 10 days. After those 25 days, Jay County Clerk Jane Ann Runyon will have 10 days to present the verified petitions to the Jay County School Board.
Sanders, who is not the same Jim Sanders who is the Democratic nominee for Portland mayor, believes the final number of signatures will be much higher. "I'm really confident we're in the 225 range," he said this morning.
On the petition, signers were asked to identify if they were a registered voter or a taxpayer in Jay County.
Formerly, property owners were the only individuals eligible to sign the petition.
This change was approved on May 11. The bill, signed by Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels went into effect that same day, Runyon said.
If a minimum of 100 signatures are verified and the school board plans to continue with the project as originally presented at its May 21 meeting, the project will first enter a 30-day waiting period. After that period, another petition drive would begin. Yellow petitions would support the project and blue petitions are against. The petition drive would last 30 days. Again, these petitions will be verified by officials from the clerk's and the auditor's offices.
Remonstrance petitions must be turned in to the clerk's office by Friday at 4:30 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
