Phillips running for State Senate (07/01/06)
By By MARY ANN LEWIS-
A Redkey resident who first threw his hat into the political ring to capture a seat on the Redkey Town Board has been slated as a candidate for State Senate District 27.
Clayton Phillips has been appointed as a Democrat candidate to unseat longtime Republican Senator Allen Paul in the Nov. 7 general election.
He first put his name on the primary ballot in May to try to gain one of two seats on the Redkey Town Board, but his residency was challenged by other candidates, and he withdrew his name from that ballot.
Phillips filed the petition for the Senate seat in the office of Indiana State Secretary of State Todd Rokita’s office on Tuesday.
Additionally, two Jay County Republicans have been chosen to fill vacant spots on the ballot in the Nov. 7 general election as the deadline for party appointments ended Friday at noon, according to Jay County Clerk, Jane Ann Runyon.
While the deadline for holding the caucus was noon Friday, paperwork can still be submitted until noon Monday, Runyon reminded party chairmen.
Jason Rice, 134 E. Delaware St., Redkey, was named by the Republicans to seek one of two seats up for grabs on the Redkey Town Board, and Diane M. Schmidt, 6367 East 800 North, Bryant, was chosen to fill a spot in the race for Wabash Township Trustee.
Rice’s Democrat opponents are Doug Stanley and Charlie Noble, and Schmidt will be seeking a win over Democrat candidate Gerald M. Miller.
Additionally, two Pennville residents are vying for one open seat on that community’s town board.
Christopher A. Tiedeman, 550 N. Grissell Ave., and Patricia “Pat” Frazee, 440 N. Meridian St., are each running for the single seat being vacated by town board member Steve Cash.
Filing for prospective Jay School Board of Trustees candidates is approaching. Petitions may be submitted beginning July 26 and the deadline for submitting a petition is noon on Aug. 25, Runyon said.
Seats up for election this year are:
•District 1, city of Portland, the seat currently held by Bryan Alexander.
•District 2, the city of Dunkirk, currently held by Mike Shannon.
•District 3, representing the townships of Penn, Jefferson, and Greene, currently held by Jay Halstead.
•District 5, the townships of Jackson, Bearcreek and Wayne outside the city of Portland, the seat currently held by Doug Inman.
Potential candidates may file their candidacy by submitting the proper petition and information to Runyon. Petitions may be obtained in her office.[[In-content Ad]]
