Plan now to give to community efforts (02/02/07)

Letter to the Editor

To the editor:

As a friend of Jay County, Ind., you know it is important to not only preserve the past, but to use the past to help educate for the future. What could be a better classroom than our historic 1926 Weiler Building, where the pride of the past can feed the energy of tomorrow?

I have noted many people upon passing away are requesting donations be given to charitable activities. Now could be the time to update your estate plan. Now could be the time to help prepare Portland, Jay County and East Central Indiana for the future.

This can easily be done through The Portland Foundation. Many families have been surprised by the amounts of funds that are given in honor of their loved ones.

I know it is hard to break the habit of sending a beautiful bouquet of flowers, but then how nice it is when the honorarium is used to educate or help another person.

An example is the John Jay Center for Learning community college which already has an account set up with The Portland Foundation.

These funds will help a Jay County citizen receive an education. This education will help Jay County be a better place for all of us.

A friend of mine, Bob Montgomery, told me the new learning center, which will soon be located at Main and Meridian in the old Weiler Building, has two missions.

One, to help create new industry and opportunity for Jay County; and two, to create high-performance people to run the new industry. An extra benefit is to raise the standard of living for every person lucky enough to live and work in Jay County.

I know Doug Inman or Kent McClung would be happy to discuss any questions you might have on giving upon death. They are located at The Portland Foundation at 112 E. Main St., by the clock on the sidewalk. Their phone number is (260) 726-4260.

Sincerely,

Barry and Elizabeth Hudson,

co-chairs, John Jay Center
